Hi All,
We arrived in Hong Kong on Friday. We crossed the border at Shenzhen rather than flying direct, It was about half the price and not much more effort. We were both a bit sniffly from the air conditioning in Guilin but thankfully this didn't cause any hold-up's at immigration. (Otherwise we might have missed all of Hong Kong!) There has been a couple of Typhoons around China, they're not near Hong Kong though, so the worst weather we have had has been a rain shower and a bit of a breeze! :-) We are safe and sound, dont worry!
On Friday evening we did a bit of exploring and went down to the harbour to watch the lights show. It was really quite spectacular, all of the buildings along the harbour front were lit up in sequence to music.
On Saturday we went to Stanley, a town by the beach across the mountains. It's a very pretty town with a lot of history to it, we had a lovely day and went mooching around Stanley Market. In the evening we went a bit crazy as we'd found an Aussie steak house, the meal was amazing! You forget how good a steak tastes after 3 weeks of noodles and street food!! The next day were both a bit icky as our bodies couldn't cope with the rich food, but it was worth it. :)
On Sunday we went to the top of Victoria Peak. We caught a tram to the top (made in Manchester, woo!) which took about 6 minutes up a very steep hill! When we got to the top the views were amazing, we could see all over the harbour and into the inland mountains, out to see and across the clouds! A cruise ship in the harbour looked like a tiny fishing boat from up there.
On Monday we went to Ocean Park. It was a bit of a tourist-trap-nightmare, full of loud, rude people... but worth it in the end. We saw some Panda's that were rescued from the Sichaun earthquake (it hit the Panda conservation reserve there), we watched a Dolphin show which was pretty cool, saw some seals and sea lions, crocodiles and various other animals! We went on a really high cable car which wasn't the most pleasant activity for Hol, Pete got some nice photo's though!
On Tuesday we went to see the "Big Buddha". It's the worlds biggest bronze Buddha statue and it was absolutely massive. We had a wander around the monastery and the gardens there, then went for tea in the local village (Starbucks really are everywhere!) We found a nice restaurant in the evening which sold Vietnamese food, so we grabbed some seats there and had some lovely food (2 meals, a starter and 4 drinks for just over £10... bargain!) We've had some pretty dodgy encounters with food around China so it was a really pleasant surprise. We opted out of the "fried frogs" on the menu and settled for beef and chicken... it's also nice to know what type of meat we're eating for a change!! We went for a wander around the night market then headed home (our accommodation has now become home, wherever we are!) to pack our bags like little Paddington's ready to hit the road for Thailand.
Hong Kong is a lovely place, we''d both definitely come back again. It's a really clean city, very Western friendly and there's plenty to do here. A definite recommendation for anyone considering it.
We are on our way to Thailand now so we'll see you there folks!
Love
Hol and Pete
