Day 23 - Port Macquarie
It's been a busy week and a bit since my last post.
The lambs
Wiggles the lamb is now doing quite well after coming quite close to death from black scour. We gave her a few doses of scourban and increased the strength of her milk which seems to have done the trick. When we left Armidale on Wednesday she was starting to nibble on grass and had lots more energy than the first week of her life. During the first week she had no energy to get up and explore and you could tell it was an effort just to get to her feet. I think Wiggles should thank Dao for getting up religiously in the middle of the night for her feeds.
Wobbles has been evicted from the house paddock after displaying anti-social behaviour!!! She was getting very aggressive towards Wiggles and a few times started head butting the shed door while Dao was feeding wiggles. She wasn't very impressed at being moved to the next paddock and has been having a good sook ever since.
I didn't realise that lambs were such jealous creatures..... but Wobbles takes the cake!!
Sophie's 4th Birthday
Last Monday was Sophie's fourth birthday and on Sunday we had a party for her at Tuffy's house. It was a dress up party and Sophie and Jessica borrowed some of Cottee's clothes and dressed up as Princesses (just for something different!). Other kids dressed up as soccer players, princesses, witches, and Charlie of course came as a cowboy... which means he wore his every day outfit consisting of jeans, stockman shirt, akubra, boots, and belt with a massive cowboy buckle. Sophie enjoyed the party and got plenty of great presents.
On her actual birthday we went to James and Ness's for dinner and had lamb chops and potatoes. The venue and menu were both Sophie's request.
Armidale to Port Macquarie
On Wednesday we upped stumps at Armidale and traveled the approx 200km to Port Macquarie. From Armidale we went south down the New England highway to Uralla where we turned left and headed toward Walcha. At Walcha we went left and headed out along the Oxley Highway to Port Macquarie. The section of the Oxley Highway is mostly mountainous and windy so it was a long, slow drive with over 3 tonne of caravan on the back. Although it was a long drive it was very picturesque scenery. We probably did the drive at the perfect time after there being so much rain recently. Everything was so lush and green with rolling hills as far as the eye could see.
Pete who runs one of the property's in Armidale said that his paddocks and Armidale area in general are looking as good as he can remember them looking in over 40 years.
Just outside of Walcha we called in to have a look at Apsley falls. This was well worth the small detour. As it was the middle of the day and quite hot it wasn't a great time for taking photos but I attempted some anyway. I will post these later on after I have transferred them off the camera.
Port Macquarie
Today is day 2 in Port Macquarie and it's currently pouring down rain with a gale wind warning!! Jessica is doing some school work, Sophie is playing, and Dao is floating between the two of them and cooking lunch.
We will probably stay here until we head to Woolgoolga next week to meet up with James and Ness (and the kids) and some of the other Armidale crew including Tuffy, Darren and LJ, Bommy and Col, Karen and her kids.
The last time I was in Port Macquarie was about 17 years ago with Katherine and Terry. It's a very pretty place and like Armidale it doesn't take you long to get anywhere you need to go. The kids went to the beach yesterday afternoon but I doubt we will get there today due to the rain. We are staying very close to the breakwall and are less than one minute walk from the rock wall. There is a pathway along the breakwall that in one direction goes down the town centre and pier and the other way goes down to Town Beach.
The site we are on is quite unlevel from front to back. We have the jockey wheel up as high as it goes and have leveled up as much as we can but still have a bit of a front to back gradient. The gradient doesn't seem to be causing any problems though. The annex is up and so far is handling the rain very well. The annex is also a handy drying room for clothes when the weather is not great (like today).
That's about it for now...
