We tore down camp and Matt made oatmeal this morning while the boys and I worked on their Junior Ranger books.
We stopped at the Visitor's Center and completed the Junior Ranger program then started driving to Crater's of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. We tried to find lunch at a restaurant on the way but did not have any luck so we ate snacks.
We arrived at Craters of the Moon, found a campsite and went into Arco to eat pizza but it ended up being pizza at a gas station so we went to Pickle's. The food was pretty good but we were really hungry. We then went to the only supermarket in town and picked up a few groceries and then drove back to our campsite.
Craters of the Moon is large but only a small section is open to visitors. So we drove the short scenic road loop on road and then hiked the inferno cone. The views were good. Then we drove back to the campsite and made dinner. Later that evening the campers across from us had a range finder and offered to let us see the craters on the moon, Jupiter and Saturn. Liam and Seth really enjoyed it and were amazed. You can see them putting the information they had to what they were seeing. I also met a mom who is traveling with her girls this year because they are doing school online. They are from Wisconsin and headed west first, then they will travel south and eventually some of the east coast.
By this time, the boys were tired so we went to bed. You can hear the sound of the highway in the distance but it got quiet a little after we went to bed. Our campsite is in the middle of lava rocks. It is an unique campground.
