Walker's Travels in Scandinavia 2017 and others
Day 12, Sun 22 May 16, Peterborough to Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges 200km, 8 - 26deg, scattered cloud and windy but fine. An early morning walk in the dark and rather windy conditions started the day. A quick brekky and on the road by 8am. Again straight into the outback with glimpses of the ranges in the distance. Traveled through some nice little townships like Orroroo, Cradock and Hawker. Refueled at Hawker as we weren't sure on the availability of fuel in the ranges (as it turned out diesel was 10cents/l cheaper at Wilpena). When we stopped outside Hawker to refuel us (coffee & homemade cake from the markets) the wind nearly blew us away. Pulled into the Wilpena Pound Resort at 11am and it was a little calmer and warmer thank goodness. Check-in took some time due the popularity of this place. Besides the van park fee of $119.54, for three nights, we paid $10 total for National Park entry. The van site has both power and water so we think that it's a real bargain. Wilpena Pound is a crater-like natural amphitheatre and the centrepiece of the ranges. The ramparts measure eight by 17 km. Walking and cycling tracks abound so we're going to be busy for the next few days. After setting up and having lunch we took a stroll to the resort shop. Well stocked with food and drinks at fairly reasonable prices considering its location. As rain was expected we cooled our heals at the van for a while before doing a recon of the area. There has got to be 100s of sites here for tents and vans, in addition to permanent tents and cabins. As usual in places like this there's plenty of birds and wildlife. As the wind didn't abate and the rain was intermittent we stayed put for the rest of the afternoon. Roast veggies and salmon/pork for dinner washed down with Campbells Bobbie Burns Shiraz 2012 (Greg's favourite year) / Wolf Blass SSB (Wens' favourite white currently). We suspect that will change when we enter the Clare Valley in a few days time. Goodnight everyone!
