Walker's Travels in Scandinavia 2017 and others
Cloudy with misty drizzle all the way, (the drizzle was so light that we only put our raincoats on the last 20km to keep the dampness out) 13-16deg, 89km, av. 18.9km/h, tot. 1380km. It is hard to believe that none of the buildings in Ypres are more than 100 years old. The whole place was flattened during 1914-18 and then rebuilt in the ensuing years; they did a great job. It's a very nice place. The last word on WW1; there were an estimated 37 million deaths, military and civilian during the conflict. Due to a rather late brekky we didn't get away till 8:45am however the kms soon clicked over and we were at the motel, Ibis, in the centre of Ghent at 2:45pm. With the constant drizzle it wasn't that ideal for taking photos or sightseeing so we didn't stop much, although it was a nice ride through farmland, beside canals or in quiet back roads mainly. The last 10km into Ghent was a bit busy. For a vast majority of the ride we were on wonderful wide, smooth bike paths which made the 89km seem rather quick and relatively easy. Ghent is a very old city going back to at least the Stone Age. Now it is a port / uni city with over half a million people. First impressions during our afternoon wander were good although the drizzle keeps coming. Fasta pasta for dinner.

Tinkie and Rob Thanks - at last No:32 on the site - we're getting addicted to your blogs!! Did you use a wide angled lens - that's the longest looking cow I've ever seen!! The flowers are beautiful and the cycle path yesterday very impressive - could almost make me think I could do that - for a km or 2!!! Wends, sounds like you're taking it all in your s'ride ( !!) now - 80+km - well done. And well done, Greg too, for lots of encouragement I'm sure. Love you and think of you lots - keep safe and well.
