Firstly, sorry we are so far behind despite the fact we are away for a year we never seem to have a minuit to ourselves. Before you go any further put the kettle on, get the hob nobs out, take the phone off the hook and if your sitting comfortably we will begin.
We got back to Bangkok a day before Sam and Tarn arrived, to save the hours of trawling round flea pits to luxury appartments we headed straigtht back to the hotel we stayed in the first time, which thankfully had room for us. Since this is our third time in Bangkok we decided to spend the day reliving the first time we were here, which was our honeymoon. We left the comfort of our hotel and jumped on the local bus to Siam Square or at least that was the plan, but with Bangkok traffic being as bad as it is especially at rush hour which seems to be all day we walked the last Kilometer and a half. As we approached MBK shopping centre we kept expecting things to be very familiar, strangely Bangkok has changed quite a bit in 5 years and it was more like a new city than a remenicent stroll, of course this was only for Rob who in the animal world would be a goldfish, how he makes it home every day I've no idea.
We re-entered the world of MBK (imagine the biggest supermarket youve ever seen then stack it on top of itself 5 times and you have MBK, infact thats not good enough, double the biggest megastore then stack that 5 time and its still not big enough) with no aim reason or purpose for being there, which is actually a dangerous place to be because there are bargains everywhere, you just never knew you needed them. After spending an hour wandering the ground floor we took the celestial escalator to the second floor where we repeated isle by isle row by row browsing, by the time we left it was dark and raining outside, so we decided it was time for a burger king before heading to the hotel we stayed in first time round. When we arrived at the hotel we felt like Rick Morranis in the resturant scene of Ghost Busters, just without the big scary bear chacing us. We had truly forgotten how luxurius the hotel was, and now with 5 months traveling under our belts it felt like staring in to eden; with tears in our eyes we headed to 7/11 for a slurpy.
Being fully refreshed and slightly tarnished by our blast from the past we headed back to our 'slum' again on public transport, in England its common to stand at the side of the road to look for the bus arriving, in Thailand this encourages ever cabby, tuk tuk and motorcycle taxi to stop and ask where you are going, this will drive you to the edge of your sanity while standing at the bus stop. We ended our evening of remeniscing with a slap up meal of pad Thai and one bottle too many of Chang Beer.
The next morning we had still recieved no message that Sam and Tarn had arrived, deciding that they were probably jet lagged and asleep we packed a bag and decided to spend the day at the golden palace before catching up with Sam and Tarn that evening. Just as we had finished packing the bag the text message came through, "we are on Kho San Road where are you?" Instant change of plans, off to Kho San Road we went. We met Sam and Tarn in a bar where we spent the next couple of hours drinking the afternoon away before attempting to visit the palace which was closed when we arrived. We parted ways to freshen up before meeting up for an evening of fine dining and local fayre. Several hours later after introducing Sam and Tarn to Samsong buckets Rob was stood on by a fat prostitute, while Sam was propositioned by another, Tarn was desperately trying to contact home and Hev was hearding the Irish by singing the wild rover. The world was put to rights like never before and it was now 6am and time to go home (god bless Sam and Tarn their body clocks must have messed up for weeks!) Sam and Tarn headed off in a taxi and we walked round the corner to our hotel, where enroute we met another crowd of people who had been drinking all night and were still going strong - we decided to join them. In their midst was a british chap who spoke in such riddles he made Rob feel like he was hammered - he was but thats not the point, that guy was weird. Rob dissapeared to the bathroom and seemed to never return as I now had the pleasure of speaking to this strange man. I decided to look for Rob in the hotel, assuming he was in our room haveing fallen asleep I preceded to hammer hell out of the door, when he didn't apper I headed to reception to get a spare key to let me in, only to meet Rob at the bottom of the stairs where he was looking for me!!! It was definately time for bed.
3pm the next day as we woke up we recieved a message telling us that Sam and Tarn felt the same way. Rob and I preceded to the hotel resturant for breakfast/lunch/dinner a meal anyway, where we were faced with same said weird guy from the night before who was still speaking in riddles (he was either still drunk or this was normal - I hoped he was drunk). Rob asked the chap a series of questions only to be told each time he already knew the answer, the guy said he lived in Bangkok and was flying home to Somerset tomorrow - it was the first thing all day that made any sence.
We did eventually meet up for an evening meal, where we all decided that no more alcohol was needed as we all had felt rough all day, which lasted until the waiter asked what we wanted to drink, the general concensus was beer, and by the way hair of the dog does work. Sam bravely made his way through a meal that he later admitted was the spiceyest thing he'd ever eaten, we had a few beers, then after such a nutritious dinner decided that a burger king was in order. This was to be the end of the abuse, at least until tomorrow!!!
The next day we managed to meet up at a reasonable time and go to the grand palace where Tarn had to lend a shirt which she was made up about, after 5 years even the palace seems to have changed, it had shrunk and seemed slightly less impressive even so we all enjoyed it. This was our last day together as Sam and Tarn caught a bus to the full moon party that afternoon and we flew to Singapore the next day.
Singapore is a story yet to come, and until then
hey Chewie what a wonderful smell youve discovered.
missing and love you all
