Jonnys Eastern Delights!
I just about survived the bus ride to Veliko Tarnovo, despite feeling well rough, and it was a pleasant suprise when our arranged pickup was actually there! The hostel we stayed at was possibly the most chilled out one I have ever been to - quite welcome really after a couple of heavy nights! Veliko is the medieval capital of Bulgaria and had a nice fortress that we walked around during the as per usual baking afternoon.
For a Saturday night the town was pretty dead, and so after a traditional Bulgarian meal for tea (basically cheese, cheese and more cheese! - even Bex can't figure out how the Bulgarian women have such great figures considering their diets!), we had a much needed early night.
Unfortunately, Sunday turned out to be the most frustrating day so far. There were no less than nine busses to our next stop; Varna on the Black Sea coast, and so we thought we would have no trouble getting out. How wrong we were. After getting up early to make it to the coast on time to catch a good few hours of sun later in the day, we really had to improvise since there were just no spaces on any of the busses heading out. So, three separate taxi rides later, we arrived in Gorna Oryahovitsa - an unattractive place with an even more unattractive train station. We had to kill four hours or so trying to decipher the Cyrillic alphabet, buying our tickets on the back of that, and then ordering food in fluent Bulgarain - generally just being frustrated.
So instead of chillin out on the beach, we spent four hours in a crowded, sweaty old train, slightly annoyed that in hindsight we need not really had spent the night in Veliko, and we had now effectively lost a whole day. Still, these tings are sent to try us!
