Go to the Next Castle and Turn Left - You Can't Miss it!
Today is Friday and we head from Limerick to see the Cliffs of Moher. We were going to visit Bunratty Castle too, but we just didn't have it in us to see another castle. I know they are all pretty and old and have their own histories, but after awhile, the stories all blend together and you can't keep track of one castle from another! Boy, if I were English, my history teacher would kill me! LOL!!
So, today Suzie drove for the first time from Limerick where our hotel was to the Cliffs of Moher, which is supposedly about an hour-half drive. That's another thing about Dubliners - a 5-10 minute walk turns into 15. An hour and half drive turns into at least 2 hours! Anyway, to get to the Cliffs, we had to drive extremely narrow streets - at least they were "two-lane" highways (and I say "two-lane" very loosely!). But these two lane highways have a speed limit of 100 km! We were lucky if we got up to 60 km! Think of driving up towards hood canal and all those twisty turny, narrow lanes going about 65 miles an hour! Not happening, right??
Of course, it's raining the entire time we're driving up to the Cliffs. But when we finally got there, there was a break in the rain! It was still cloudy and VERY windy and cold, but not raining. We go up to the cliffs (and look another random castle!) and it was spectacular!!! I can't even describe the beauty of it! Pictures don't do it justice. The cliffs thermselves were amazing - but an even more incredible thing is that there were sheep and goats eating grass on the sides of these cliffs! I couldn't believe it! One step further, and they would've for toppled over! It was beautiful, cold, windy and gray - but it was worth the drive to see them! We stayed and took pictures for a while, and then went into the visitor center to warm up and buy crap (I mean souvenirs!). By the time we were done, the rain started up again! So, we were really lucky to miss most of the rain while we were there.
I drove back from the Cliffs of Moher until about 100 km from Dublin. I got really tired and then Suzie drove for awhile again. I'm glad we had more than one driver. Jude wanted to drive, but it was just too tense and dangerous - I just didn't have the guts to let her drive.
Suzie and I switched driving again so that I would drive into town (Dublin). We actually got the car back on time and with no dents or scratches! WooHoo!!
Tonight is our last night to sleep in a hotel room! I can't WAIT to go home tomorrow! It's been a fabulous trip, but a long one. And I miss my home, friends and family!
