Woke up to deathly quiet, no traffic, no sirens, so peaceful, strange for a city.....
Roger woken up with a dizzy spell this morning....waiting for stemitil to crank in. Fingers crossed it is not the begining of anything horrible.
The quiet has broken, the gondola 'drivers' are busily chatting and cleaning their gondolas.....
Breaky at the main hotel on the Grand Canal, what a spot.....I asked if they happened to gave any GF toast......next thing out came a basket of pre-packed goodies.....bless the Italians! Took most of it with me of course. Nothing to buy in the shops so got to grab it while you can.
Found the Rialto Bridge, crowds building up. What a mecca Venice is for shoppers......
Not disabled or stroller friendly though....only found 1 bridge with a ramp.
No seats to sit on, have to pay at restaurants to sit down, very smart, space a premium of course. People sitting on steps everywhere.
Might be wrong, but is this the only place in the world without a McDonalds?
Sun is out and such a lovely day. Even found a restaurant that has GF pasta and actually advertises the fact....guess where we are dining tonight! If we can find it that is.....
Every little street or alley way looks the same, very few street signs. If you wander more than 3 streets from the hotel, consider yourself lost! Only way back is to somehow find the square and navigate from there. We thought we were heading home and after wandering for half an hour ended up where we started from!
Back to the hotel for rest and eat some of my goodies.....Roger seems to have lost the dizzies after a couple of stemitil, thank heavens.
Great news.......this morning we were able to check bank records, and the bank have replaced the $2500 stolen money from London......thanks CBA.
By all accounts they had The America's Cup.....?trials here last week and apparently Australia won.....wasn't even aware it was still happening!
Something else we have been doing a lot if this trip (apart from drinking), is passive smoking! They seem to smoke constantly and everywhere in Europe.
Finally found the restaurant......scary for a start, almost ran.........then we asked for a wine list, next thing he was opening a bottle of Muller Thurgau and pooring it!......what can I say ..... They serve GF!
I think he realised we needed a bottle.....cleaver marketing!
All of a sudden the restaurant filled up....even some Aussies next to us!
We are quite aware that they know that 99.99% of customers they will never see again......great experience none the less.
Everyone pays €70 no matter what you eat and drink...... More wine please....
Challenge now......find our way back to the hotel......
Roger's thoughts on the day.......
It's 6am, the city is so quiet one can hear nothing...no cars, no sirens, no dogs barking, no birds, no rain, no lawn mowers or blowers.....I can see a milkman delivering some stuff. Eileen is still sound asleep.
......It is now 7.30am and I can hear a odd seagull.
...It says in a book here in the room....'The only thing that could surpass this city of water would be a city built in the air.'
