Tip No. 7 Go to the river front and get on the gym equipment with local Cambodian children...Rachel Irvin loved it
One of the main attractions of Phnom Penh are The Killing Fields, located about 45 minutes away in a Tuk Tuk...we spent a few hours here learning about the Khmer Rouge.
It was very sad to see how the Cambodians were treated under this regime and at The Killing Fields you see the mass graves, the ways in which people were kept and killed and you hear stories from survivors. I think the most shocking thing was that this only ended in 1975 and that people are still on trial for the crimes today.
Because it was so recent, we were told that when the area floods (which is frequent in monsoon season) bones, teeth and clothing often rise to the surface. Whilst we were walking round the area we could often see rags on the ground and bones starting to come through...very horrible to think, and it is estimated that 3 million people were killed during this period.....
After this, we were feeling abit sad (!) so we decided to head down to the river front to get something to drink. Next thing I know, Rach is trying to join in with a Cambodian football team and then she's on the gym equipment with a little lady...I just couldn't stop her!!
Tomorrow to the beach! Finally!!!
Lots of love, Helen xxxx
