The next stop on our trip was Sin City. If you're looking for cultural insights into our trip, then stop reading now. As you can imagine Vegas was 4 days of drinking, gambling and partying. After our trip into the wilderness this was just what we needed!
I don't think anything could have prepared us for just how crazy Vegas is. The 'Wild Wild West' (our budget accommodation off the strip) even had a casino which made a post-breakfast flutter a bit too easy. Everything is massive - it can take 20 mins to walk from one hotel to the next (and that's the ones next door to each other). And then there's the free drinks that the casinos serve you while you're gambling... just to encourage you to put a bit more on red.
While recovering from our hangovers one day, Tom decided enough was enough and it was time to get his unruly mop cut. Now only the best will do for our Tommy so off he went to the Christophe salon in the MGM Grand and got himself a $65 haircut Never fear though as that night the tables were in our favour and we came out 'up' for the day. We also realised that what they say about never knowing the time of day inside the casinos is true... we looked at the watch after our little post-dinner gamble and it was 3.30am.
Unfortunately that's where our gambling luck ended and someone may have got a bit carried away one night (but the less said about that the better).
Rich's friend from Facebook, Thea, also joined us in Vegas for a few nights. It turned out that one of the big nights at the club Surrender we'd been planning on going to (yes you're right, it was Rich's idea not ours), Facebook had a table there. Cue an open bar all night and even Tom and I managed to have ourselves a good time around all the young'uns.
One night we decided to take in a show and went to see the illusionist, David Copperfield. He's the biggest grossing entertainer of all time having sold 40 million tickets and has 11 Guinness World Records to his name. Needless to say we were expecting pretty good stuff, and he didn't disappoint. Sure the show was corny as hell (he likes to build in stories that tug on your heart strings into his illusions) but the grand finale of transporting 13 people across the room would baffle even the biggest cynics. Thumbs up all round from us.
We tried one of the famous buffets when we went into the Monte Carlo hotel. Also we went into a diner called Dick's where their USP is that they will be horrible to you. This involves throwing cutlery at you and giving you hats with less than complimentary names on.
Our last night in Vegas was spent having a fancy dinner and drinks at the Sugar Factory while Tom enjoyed his friend's stag do. I can't write about what he got up to as we all know 'what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas'.
