We got up at 3.30 am and found our foreheads had been bitten by mosquitos, which was not very nice! (strange place to be bitten) We got the minibus to the airport, the driver took us to the gate of the 'International Friendship Bridge' (Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge over the Mekhong River funded by the Australian government as development aid for Laos). The gate was closed and we wondered why he had taken us here, when the driver saw that the gate was closed, he made a telephone call to someone. He then realised that he had taken us to the wrong place. He eventually dropped us off at the airport at 4.45am which was slightly late. We had to check in at the domestic terminal as our flight had a layover in 'Pakse', Laos.
Once we had checked in, we saw Laura and Jamie and sat with them. Whilst chatting with them, we all agreed to share a taxi into the town centre of Siem Reap to save money.
Our flight to Siem Reap was on time (6.30am), it was a comfortable flight, they offered us a complimentary breakfast which included: croissant, doughnut and fruit, which was very tasty.
We landed in Pakse and had to go through immigration to get stamped out of Laos, this was a quick and smooth process. After this, all of the passengers got back on the same plane. The plane took off straight away after everyone had boarded. It was not long after boarding that we were given or second complimentary meal (mini hotdog in a sesame bun and taro bun), we were pleasantly surprised to have been given two meals within a short flight.
We landed on time in Siem Reap, Cambodia at 9.15am local time (Cambodia is 7 hours ahead of UK time). We had to fill in a visa application form and submit a passport photo, the visa cost 20 USD each. There was an ATM machine at the airport where Jay managed to get some cash out to pay for the visa. (Every cash machine in Cambodia distributes US Dollars and not the local currency, Cambodian Riels)
The four of us collected our bags and went to get a taxi for 7 USD between us. Jay did some research the previous night and had found a particular guesthouse called 'Prohm Roth', which we all decided to get taken to as this was very central. Upon arrival, they had rooms available and we all decided to stay here as we liked the look of it. The room cost 9 USD per night, the room we stayed in was quite big and clean, the shower room was very small. We also had free wifi in the room.
After a shower, we both fell asleep for a couple of hours as we were very tired from getting up really early this morning.
When we woke up, we went out to get some food as we were hungry, we went to 'Khmer's Kitchen' as we saw some locals eating there (usually a good sign). Jay had Cambodian style chicken with cashewnuts and Helen had pork rice soup, it was a tasty dinner.
