SATURDAY 19TH FEBRUARY
Oh my lord, what a hangover! it was not helped with a seriously hot day and a long journey from the islands by water taxi and a cramped and overheated long minibus journey through windy mountain roads to Lost and Found ecolodge followed by a long uphill hike to the lodge. It was fantastic when we got there though with great views but a fair amount of wind, rain and a large temperature drop. Come back sun, all is forgiven! They have a pet Kinkajou there that was rescued from a poacher and he is called Rocky and is sooo sweet. After sunset we were let into his cage to say hello. He is so lively and cheeky and comes straight up to say hello and bite your fingers as you pet him. He has a special fondness for nostrils and ear lobes.... it was all in jest though. Tom got totally molested by him and had his head licked and nose bitten and it was sooo funny! his fur feels like a vintage teddy bear and his paws feel all soft like human feet and man has he got a strong tail or what!
SUNDAY 20TH FEBRUARY
Waking up high in the Panamanian mountains was awesome if a little chilly after the caribbean. It was kind of a sluggish start as we all tried to shake off the excess rum from Bocas and as tom decided to stay in bed all day myself and Casey set off for the hills to see the river. We went via a lookout post where we could see the pacific ocean which was so cool and also a strangler fig tree which we were able to walk through. When we got down to the river after the steep climbing we found a spot called Pink Panther Canyon and decided to take a dip. We climbed up onto a rock and jumped into the clear but oh so cold water and then had to scramble out. I felt so alive jumping in and we had such a laugh doing it and then drying out in the sun afterwards. It was a much easier hike back and I saw a magnificent Blue Morpho butterfly and looked a right idiot as I tried to chase it so i could take a photograph (to no avail...)
later in the evening the weather got much worse with wind and rain so after a yummy communal dinner and an even yummier hot shower i took part in the table football tournament and retired to bed early tired but happy as there are so many funny people to talk to here.
MONDAY 21ST FEBRUARY
Last night was a bit dramatic as i was rudely awoken at 3am by a wet mattress which quickly turned out to be a drunken young american lad swamping himself in his sleep`and then consequently me. oh, the joys of hostel life. It took me so long to clean myself up and to calm down that sleep was not really an option. So the day was spent mostly watching films with popcorn, reading and resting. Although, i did bully casey into taking a walk down the hill to buy a pineapple and some plantain from the farmers, It was a much needed rest day.
At sunset we went back to see rocky and it was my turn to be attacked. he wrapped his tail around my wrist and I knew I was in for it as he nipped and clawed at my hair in a friendly sniffy kind of way. soooo cute. i even got to see his tongue which is ridiculously long! As beautiful as it is here, back to the sun tomorrow.....
