We made it at last! 1.5 hour flight to DC. 14 hour flight to Ethiopia. 2 hour flight to Kilimanjaro Airport in Moshi, Tanzania. And none of those times include the crazy layovers! But we made it safely and so did our luggage!
We were then off on a bus to our stay in Moshi, called the Ameg Lodge; our home away from home. It is here on this bus, after hours and hours of traveling that I fall into a mental recess. I just look outside and try to capture the sights in my long-term memory. I see my first person riding a bicycle and carrying bananas on her head. I notice right away the beauty of the women against the dusty backdrop. They are all so lovely to look at in their bright colors and flowing dresses.
At Ameg, we desperately try to connect (all 25 of us at once) to the free Wi-Fi, in order to let our families know we made it safely. I give up. Instead, I shoot a text explaining and then I am off exploring the grounds. The flower gardens are lovely, green yellow, reds…There is a swimming pool…hmmmm. My travel Dr. said no swimming in Africa- I am not quite brave enough to go against these orders. (plus there is some species of bug in it!)
We finally get to meet our travel guide and soon-to-be friend Azizi , with TREK2Kili and go over some travel plans. I'm nervous and excited.
Getting ready for bed was interesting. I tried to shower: it was cold and not much pressure. I try to not get water in my mouth, sheesh. The things we take for granted. It is nearly impossible to brush my teeth without turning on the water- it just feels so WRONG! Lol! The things I miss the most are these little things. But I am very excited to sleep under a bug net for the first time in my life! That's when we heard a small scream from the courtyard. I go rushing outside (bare feet and all) to discover that a friend nearly stepped on a mad tarantula! YEAH our first strange wildlife. We science teachers scramble to get cameras and snap a picture, and silently note to ourselves that shoes are probably a really good idea ALL the time!
