It's crazy to think that tomorrow we will be flying to Asia again!
Australia has been amazing, we've had some really good times here and met some awesome people.
We're flying at 9.35am from Melbourne airport to Phuket...stopping in Kuala Lumpur to change planes with a 4 hour wait.:-/
It'll be a long flight but worth it to get back to the land of the smiles!
We've really missed Thailand. The friendly people and the friendly price tags too haha! And just the beauty of everything there, Asia is by far like nothing I've ever seen.I can't wait to see people peddaling by on their bikes carrying everything but the kitchen sink again! Never fails to amaze!
So we were in Sydney for 3 days,2 nights...and I wish we had longer there. If we'd have known how awesome it was we woulda stayed there longer than Byron Bay! But of course the first thing we were told by everyone when it came to Sydney was "oh it's expensive!"
...Really?
Yeah, it's expensive like the rest of Australia, but it's not as bad as everyone made out. There were... I won't say cheap... but cheap-er than elsewhere deals around for drinks and food, which is really all that matters to a backpacker isn't it? lol.
We got to Sydney after having a 13 hour greyhound ride which was seriously uncomfortable...cold (damn the air con!) and achy. We'd got drenched the night before in Byron Bay because for some reason it decided to pour down with the rain as we left our hostel! >:-(
What are you playing at gods of weather? Is it not enough we have to lug our heavy backpacks down the street and around a few corners without getting drenched at the same time?! And as if that wasn't bad enough, when we went to get our luggage out of storage we realised the reception of the hotel had closed and we no longer had a key to get in as we had checked out.
Face.Palm.
So we had to rattle the gates and shout things like "HELLOOOOOO! LET US IN!" until some smarmy German guy came down to the gate, stuck his head against it and said "hmmm...do I let you in..."
"Yes, you do, we need to get our luggage as we have a greyhound to catch in 25 MINUTES!"
He smirked across his smarmy little face and looked at Lukes Manunited shirt he was wearing and said "Hmmm..I don't know...I support Liverpool...I'm not sure I should let you in."
I gave the most fake laugh ever. As funny as that joke WOULD have been if we weren't standing soaking wet from the rain and if we didn't HAVE to get a greyhound in 25 minutes and this idiot was making us wait...at the moment I was stressed, tired and drenched, and I had no time for stupid attempt at humour and silly football rivalry...it's only a game!!! OPEN THE DOOR DAMNIT.
So anyway after he let us in and we got our bags, ran through the rain to the bus stop and got on the bus, shivered and got about an hours sleep during 13h hours ,arrived in Sydney really tired but soon woke up when we saw how beautiful it was!
We came in across the harbour bridge and could see the opera house sat amongst all these gorgeous buildings.
Sydney was culture-tastic. Every building/bench/tree had a purpose/history.
We took a walk through the botanical gardens which were incredibly pretty, had a chat with the cockatoos and random birds in there...sat on the grass for a bit and enjoyed the view of the opera house from a distance.
The opera house itself is an incredible building...apparently if you took all the parts of it and put them together it would make a sphere...the guy who designed it was inspired by an orange that he'd cut up. Did you know that? Random fact of the day!
We also did a three hour walking tour of the city which was very informative. Didn't realise there was so much history there. Loved it!
We met up with our Canadian friend Melany and her Korean boyfriend Jisoo, had a few drinks with them and went for food in an Irish bar called Scruffy Murphys which did discounted steak. You cannot argue with discounted steak.
We also met them the following day for lunch, which consisted of McDonalds. We walked through one of the malls close to the incredibly long George street which killed my feet the day before.
There was a lot of cute little Asian shops with makeup and beauty products in that I just wanted to BUY!!!!! Wait until Asia liz, it'll be cheaper...
After that we said our goodbyes as we had a greyhound to catch to Melbourne that evening...I know we'll meet up with them again one day, their the type of people that we know we'll stay in touch with.
Another 12 hour overnight trip and Melbourne arrives in the distance looking very skyscraper-y.
The old trams here are really cool, there's a free one you can use to go around the city, we did that last night and got to see some cool buildings.
so far we haven't seen the "incredible bar scene" we've been told about...where are they?! Hopefully we'll find out tonight when we meet Danielle, another Canadian we met up in Noosa when we were working at the Halse Lodge. We've stayed in touch and she's going to be in Melbourne for a while...her birthday is tomorrow but since we'll be on a plane by then we'll celebrate with her tonight! :-D
We've just booked our hotel in Phuket...the green papaya apartments, costing us a whopping 8 pounds per night for an ensuite double room, with a balcony and view of the city, and a pick up from the airport which is 45 minutes away.
Honestly, I look at the prices we pay just to blink here in Australia and it makes me glad i'm going back to Asia! You can barely walk down the street without some kind of cover charge!
I'm looking forward to the Thai food aswell, thats another thing i've realised about myself on this trip is that I seem to have some passion for food, and I kinda enjoy cookery programs more than I thought. Particularly when it's Gordon Ramsay shouting at some woman because her restaurant isn't up to scratch.
When watching a program like this before on our travels it seemed like we were the only ones who found it entertaining...apparently watching Gordon Ramsay lose his temper and shout at some tearful Italian-American woman who shouts back at him and calls him everything under the sun, before he turns her restaurant into the flavour of the season is not entertaining in the slightest. "...why are we watching this..?" Was one response.
Um,because it's FUNNY. That's why.
Anyway, what that had to do with anything I don't know. Just saying!
Bring on the Thai food! I have a green curry with my name on it, with loads of chicken fried rice!! It's a good thing our hotel is up a bit of a hill, because I'm going to EAT!!!!
Another thing I can't wait for is all the Asian clothes! Being of a similar build (just with a bum, apparently) they all seem to fit me and once again are really cheap and cute! I still have a white lace top I bought the first time around and I can't wait to wear it again!
At the moment we need to wrap up warm because it feels like the U.K here...Melbourne is freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing! It's like December in the U.K right now....can't wait for the sun to reappear! :-D
So this'll be our last entry from Australia! It's been awesome! :-D
Until Thailand....xx
