Today is going to be one of the longest days in history I think. We´re still in Buenos Aires, killing time until we fly out this afternoon. Neither of us slept all that well last night because we´re too excited about coming home!
Buenos Aires has been an awesome place to finish the trip though. Great atmosphere, delicious food and it´s cheap. We arrived Sunday afternoon on an overnight bus and headed straight out in search of the famous Sunday markets. We wandered through some beautiful neighbourhoods full of expensive looking shops, and eventually stumbled across the Recoleta handcrafts market. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, and the parklands where it was held were full of street performers, stalls and good smells. Masses of people were just sunning themselves on the lawns, taking in the buskers. We spent a good few hours shopping, and saw a tango show. That night the hostel we´re staying at had a special deal for a professional tango show, so we decided to go along. The guy warned us that is was quite a classy affair, but said we´d be ok in jeans (not that we had much choice in the matter, I only own 1 pair of jeans and 1 pair of shorts at the moment!) Heath and I have never felt more underdressed in our lives I think. We were met at the door of the restaurant with champagne and led through to a side room where a singer and dancer were performing for the pre drinks. We were then led through to the main dining room, surrounded by men in shirts and ties and women in dresses, where we had a 3 course meal with as much wine as we could drink. Waiters were hovering with bottles to swoop in and fill up your glass if it even showed signs of emptying. After the meal the floor show started. About 10 dancers backed by a live band and singers danced for around an hour or so. It was fantastic, for me the music was just as good as the dancing. We rolled out of there feeling very fat and happy.
We visited a cemetery on Monday which was more like a mini building estate. Ornate rooms built over top of vaults just stretched on and on, i´ve never seen anything like it. There were massive statue monuments dotted around as well for all the rich and famous. The rest of the time we´ve just been wandering around San Telmo looking at all the crazy antique stores and stuffing ourselves full of steak. I now have some interesting lump things on the back of my tongue which Heath seems to think are a result of excessive meat intake. Hence I´ll be living a vegetarian existance for a little while now!
I guess we´ll be seeing all you guys really, really soon now! We´ll be in Adelaide on Tuesday, so send us a message if you´d like to catch up. Here´s to the next 20 hours on a plane!
