The Merrijig Inn came up trumps and provided us with the best meal we have enjoyed so far. Flat head fish and broad bean purée for me and a succulent beef dish for David. The lemon tart dessert was to die for. A cosy night in our attic room including hot water bottle followed and then more eating with Tanya's home baked sourdough toast with perfectly poached eggs and lashings of butter and marmalade.
The weather outside was not much better although the rain was not quite so penetrating. We spent a pleasant hour seeing the sights of Port Fairy including a fantastic sighting of Right Whales just off the beach.
Our little blue car then pointed north and we headed for the hills pitching up mid afternoon at Halls Gap the centre for exploring the Grampians.
The Grampians National Park is a group of rugged mountain ranges renowned for colourful spring windflowers, spectacular scenery and wild life. A drop into the visitors centre has given lots of advice on sights to see and some lovely walks to occupy us for the day tomorrow. We had time before dusk to take a circular track for a couple of miles along a creek and through some bush. Our first encounter with a few grey western kangaroo was very exciting but by the end of the walk we came to realise that they are as common as sheep around here. The emu were pretty special too.
With a more promising weather forecast we are really looking forward to exploring further afield in the morning. There are supposed to be duck billed platypus in these here hills, now that would be amazing.
Our abode for the night is the Pinnacle Holiday Lodge. Think Crossroads 1970's style. We have paid extra for the spa room ( it has a bath and a shower) it's clean, warm(ish) has a tv, kitchenette and the promise of wifi so all is well for The Penwarden's and given it's Saturday night we are treating ourselves to an Indian takeaway and a few stubbies in front of the tv. There maybe a fight for the remote control for either Aussie Rules Footie or the first episode of the new Dr Who series. I wonder who will win?
Hopefully I will get Internet access this time. The last few stops have offered it, I have got a good wifi single using the passwords provided but not been able to connect. Not sure if it's us or them but continue to live in hope.

Bruce & Janet Glad you're having a good time - shame about the weather - hopefully it will improve. Sounds as if you did the same walk along the creek that we did - kangaroos all over everybodies lawns etc. As far as your wifi is concerned - I had problems getting on sometimes - discovered that could usually overcome these by logging on, entering passwords etc, then turning off phone completely and restarting it, when it automatically joined the network and was fine.
Min Really must get dressed now,all this reading of blogs!!Will look out for Your house guests next Saturday!Good job you took some warmer clothes with you.Fancy having hot water bottles in September! Do you think some things are cheaper there?Look forward to the next chapter!
