15th December 2010 - Arrived in Melbourne - 4 hour flight from Auckland, New Zealand
17th December 2010 - Pint on Punt, Windsor, Melbourne
Wow!! Were finally here in Australia - cant say the first sight of where were staying is what we were expecting! Were just outside of the city centre, about 10 minutes tram away.
Our first day we spent walking around and seeing what was around. We walked through some pretty run down streets that didn'tlook like sunny, pretty Australia, that led us to Chapel Street (a main strip of shops, bars and restaurants). It was not what were expecting and quite a disappointment. We bought a Lonely Planet book that day and read up about things to do and see - which is when we realised we needed to get to Federation Square and the main city centre.
Much better!!! We went to Federation Square yesterday and also went to the Melbourne Aquarium which was pretty cool. They had penguins, sharks, massive sting rays, jelly fish and loads of other Australian sea life.
That evening, we had made plans to meet up with an old friend of mine Pete who now lives in Melbourne. I used to work with him about 4-5 years ago and haven't seen him since, so I was really excited about seeing him again. He met us after work in Federation Square and we went for a few drinks and then he took us to a really nice balcony restaurant that over looked the water and treated us to dinner! From there we then went on to a few other bars and finished in a cider roof top bar which was pretty cool! We had such a good night that night and even though Matt didn't know Pete prior, they both got on really well!
Oh I forgot about saying who we bumped into that day before we got to Federation Square. Was so weird....... We were walking down the street, making our way to the tram stop when straight ahead infront of us was Jody!! - Our Canadian friend that we spent quite a bit of time with when we were in New Zealand. She was the one I did my canyon swing with (in the green jumper). We knew she was in Melbourne but we didn't know where she was staying or working as we'd only just arrived the day before. We couldn't believe it. Its such a massive place and just at that moment walking down the street we bump into her on her lunch break. She might be having a bbq this weekend at her place and there's a few other friends of ours that we met in New Zealand that are here in Melbourne too so they might be going as well.
Today were going back to the main city centre where Federation Square is, as we haven't even seen half of the places round there. Matt likes it there because they have a massive screen TV showing The Ashes live for free! Think were also going to walk down to the MCG so Matt can have his picture outside there thinking we could have been there for Boxing Day as our mate Pete is a member and said he could have got us tickets!!! Matts so gutted!! Were going to be up the east coast somewhere around that time so its a real shame.
Anyway were off out now! See yah!!
