Singapore
First impressions was that it was not as "clean" as what everyone was telling me, I was told it was very clinical and extremely clean but it is just normal? I am staying near little India which is where all the backpackers stay. Hostels are very very expensive. But I thouroughly researched and found one for 25 pounds (they dont have the pound sign on this keyboard!) It is a long walk into town and especially to Clarke Quay but thats okay, we have alot of time! This is really giving us a taste of Asia and slowly and giving us insight for what we will be experiencing on the rest of the trip. It is monsoon season here and it rains hard! Very sticky and hot. Not as hot as Cairns though although the sun hasnt actually been out yet! We spent the whole of yesteday just looking around. The Chinese populate 70% of Singapore and it shows... its like being in Sydney! Lots and lots of shopping to be done, but we cant buy anything as we spend enough just paying for accommodation and food every day. The food here is very cheap breakfast for 1 pound fifty. I wanted to have breakfast in a little local place so we sat in this cafe inside and ordered. I ordered 2 eggs, coffee and toast for 1 pound fifty and Mike sausage, bacon toast for the same price. The eggs came in their shell which I found interesting. I peeled them to put on my toast (which tasted of cake). They were quite runny, I only ate one of them as it did seem a bit uncooked. Mikes sausage was strange, joking that it might have been made from dog meat! The coffee over here is gorgeous I think. They hardly put any milk in but I like it. We left feeling a bit strange after breakfast and basically just ate and shopped all day.! I bought a pair of flip flops for 6 pounds as I left my truly loved $70AUD reef flip flops with a bottle opener on the bottom in the tent on the last day in Oz! Gutted they were supposed to last me forever thats why I spent so much money on them, they were so comfy! These ones hurt but I refuse to tell Mike that! Come rain, hail or Shine Mike is always in a good silly mood, he truly is the best travelling partner to have. If I had the whole population of the world to choose from I'd choose him. I think being silly together, singing stupid things, dancing stupid dances makes a successful relationship. We are getting on great, he is one in a million and I feel so lucky to have him with me. (soppy but very true). Okay getting back to Singapore! Traffic is manic, we feel like we are the only white people in Singapore and quickly point when we see English or white people, to show ourselves we are not alone! There are alot of places of worship with people waving sticks around and bowing and praying to loud music in the streets. There are alot of face gurners in the street, mainly older chinese people pulling weired faces as though they are a little not in this world, which freaks me out a little when walking down the street! OOOOOh how could I forget the one toothed taxi driver who tried to charge us $72 to get into the City when it should only be $20! We avoided paying it, but still ended up paying $28 which I am still annoyed about! When I get a chance i'm writing a complaint to the Singapore Airport! $72!!!! He was driving around in circles and still didnt drop us off on the right street! Me and Mike were outraged and every now and again when we are in the middle of something normal one of us shouts $72 bloody dollars! This is getting us ready for Thailand! All the crimbo lights and decorations are up in Singapore which look great. There is a huge Ministry of Sound here biggest in the world which we might go to. We went and looked at the place we are meeting my Nana and Grandad tomorrow! Sooooo excited! I've pencilled in a short simple itinary for when they get here, as we will probabley spend most of the day just sitting eating and talking! I thought we could get the hop on hop off tour bus of the city, go to Clarke Quay for summat to eat and go on the big rotating wheel. Okay well thats it for now. I've left Mike upstairs in the hostel reading "The damage done". I've finally got him to read it and he is actually enjoying it i think, as whenever I am out in the shower or doing summat he picks the book up imediately! When asked are you enjoying reading? he simply replies " I dont enjoy reading I'm enjoying the storey" He refused to believe that reading is enjoyment, but as he is getting more into the book I think this may finally change! Me, Shell and Cairns were going on and on and on for him to read this fabulous book and he just didnt get why it would be good to read. I willl let you know what he says at the end! Speak soon love Hayley x x x
