Sorry i haven't updated this in a while, its been a busy month for me! Well what can i say about Tully, theres a buzzing nightlife, lots of entertainment- no im been sarcastic, there is a supermarket and a DVD shop, a liquor shop (thats the entertainment) and thats it!! Oh plus theres a lot of very strange interbred- bare footed locals. The first time me and Holly went to the supermarket we were practically the only ones in shoes, very weird experience. So the banana farm. Well my boss Peter is a miserable old fart from Fiji, i thought Fijian people were lovley but aparantly i was mistaken. I've got used to the 5am wake up calls now but at first they were a killer. The work itself takes some getting used to as its pure physical labour, and Peter really gets his wages worth out of us! Our main jobs are leafing, which means we have a huge knife on a stick and we have to remove all brown or dead leaves from the banana trees. This usually means we see lots of palm sized spiders, and often slice the odd tree snake in half by accident. Also we have to do bunch pruning which means we remove the bottom two bunches of bananas to help the top ones to grow better, ants and cockroaches are often involved in this task. The third main thing we do is stringing (no not swinging!) which is where we have to tie the younger trees to the older ones to support them. Again spiders and webs are a majour factor in this. We have also seen iguanas, lots of frogs and toads, lizards, and there is also crocodiles in the Tully river that runs through some parts of the farm. One guy actually had his dog taken by a croc and we suspect a few other dogs have gone that way too. We only have 8 working days left though, not that we are counting! After Tully we are going to head south to Townsville and hopefully get back to the 21st century. We plan to spend some time there if we like it then catch a boat to Magnetic Island where we will also spend some time scuba diving the barrier reef. So all this farm work is worth it in the end!!!
