The bus from Sao Paulo to Foz de Iguacu was horrible. BUT we had so much cheese, so many nuts, and so much wine, and a strange little Brazilian man that kept shouting at us to keep us entertained. Halfway through the freezing journey a witch got on the bus and cackled ´welcome to cold Brazil´ as we layered up our crop tops.
Arrived in Foz de Iguacu, the Brazilian side of the falls, two hours too early at 5am and had to wait for the coffee shop to open as we shivered in a huddle in the bus terminal.
Finally thawed and hopped on a bus to the town centre where we caught another bus to the park gates. By the time we got to the entrance the sun was shining and we had to take off all our clothes again!
The Brazilian side of the falls is supposed to be ´not as good´as the Argentinian, side but once we began the trail that took us through the forest overlooking the waterfalls we couldn´t help but be amazed. Iguazu Falls is HUGE, it stretches further than any other in the world. There were rainbows everywhere we looked, and our photos just couldn´t capture how beautiful it is - something you just have to see for yourself.
We got to the end of the trail, bought sandwiches and mango juice, which caused the biggest bee swarm we have ever seen in our lives. Mike acted the hero and started squashing them all over the place with a tissue while Sarah and Beccy ran in circles. Phoebe was the pillar of serenity, too busy eating her sandwich to care. The other tourists watched us with disdain, but they were only attacking us! Really!
After a narrow escape (!) went to cross the border to Argentina. Had some drama with the taxi man which brought out the New Yorker in Mike, even in Spanish! He tried to charge us twice the price by switching currencies.. Mike went nuts while we looked on in confusion and slyly moved our bags further and further away from the taxi.
Found to our way to our hostel, obviously chose the one with the pool, and settled in with beer and ice cream straight away. Annoyed the poor guy at reception for about half an hour with questions about excursions, none of which we actually did.
Highlight of the evening was definitely the kilo of dulce de leche ice cream that Mike convinced us to buy, after we planned on sharing just a 1/4 kilo.
Next morning we were super keen and ended up the first people in the national park! Even before the coach load of chinese tourists and their massive lensed cameras. We went straight to Devil´s Throat and it completely took our breath away, it was like standing on the edge of the earth. We were surrounded by waterfalls on all sides, getting soaked by the spray and chasing the rainbows. We coudn´t even see the bottom of the waterfalls for all the spray, but the swallows flying up and down the drop were having the best time. None of us had ever experienced anything like it, we think standing on that ledge should be on everyone´s bucket list.
We thought after seeing that crazy huge waterfall that everything else would be a let down in comparison, but we spent the rest of the day wandering around marveling at even more waterfalls that were just incredible. The paths in the park are built right over the edges of some of the waterfalls, and it feels like you could get swept away at any moment.
We ended the day with a nice gentle boat ride... into the actual waterfalls! It was a big inflatable speed boat, that swerved over the white water rapids and took us underneath two of the biggest waterfalls. Got absolutely drenched and never laughed so hard.. had to go dry our sodden clothes in the all you can eat restaurant (what a shame) and even managed to steal all the cake for our next bus ride.
Iguacu Falls is one of the most incredible places we´ve seen, and everyone should go if they ever get a chance.
We caught our next overnight bus exhausted and happy, and woke up ready to get lairy in Buenos Aires.
