Hi All,
Before we start blogging away, we'd like to wish you first a merry Christmas and a very happy New Year!
After 3 months of traveling in South America, we are now back on holiday mode in New Zealand. They rent these very hip campervans with cool graffiti on them… however we are driving, eating, drinking and sleeping in a very unhip one. The good thing is that the more uncool the campervan looks, the more comfortable it is, so we're not complaining at all. We drove from North to South and really enjoyed the exciting stuff that New Zealand offers. We started in Auckland and drove to the Waitomo caves. There we did some abseiling, rafting in the caves, checked out the glowworms (looks like a starry night) and finished with a 27m climb out of the cave (that was definitely high enough for me). Then we drove on to the 'thermal wonderland' close to Rotorua. That place is amazing; you really realize that you're on the shaky isles with all these geysers and hot pools around you. Due to bad weather we unfortunately couldn't do the Tongariro crossing (one of the most beautiful day hikes in the world, they say), so we drove straight to Wellington. Wellington is a great city or should we say big village? The atmosphere is relaxed, there are nice bars and restaurants, good shopping streets, lots of art galleries and the ferry that takes you from one island to the other.
On the South Island we started with the Marlborough Sounds, a really beautiful place with amazing views. The Marlborough region is the biggest wine producing region in New Zealand and famous for its Sauvignon Blanc. We had another 'Henri Bloem' appointment there and spent a great afternoon at Auntsfield Wine Estate talking about wine and tasting them of course. That night we even camped in their vineyard. After a couple of relaxed days, we went on a sea kayak trip in the Abel Tasman National Park. That day we had perfect weather and were lucky because the following days on the West Coast were pretty wet.
We will spend Christmas in our campervan and then fly to Sydney for New Year's Eve. We will have our countdown to New Year in good company as Martijn and Aantink will also be there.
So when most of you are still enjoying lunch on the 31st, we will be popping the champagne corks!
Enjoy your Christmas Holidays and see you in the next blog in 2010 from Australia!
