"Ich hab' noch einen Koffer in Berlin" - I've had this Marlene Dietrich song playing in my head since we arrived. Not a bad thing, and I can understand now a bit better her sentiment. Berlin was not a highlight on my list, other than the arts scene, which is well known to be vibrant - I didn't realize, however, before arriving that a third of the city is dedicated to green space, and is, as such, attractive as well as alive. Our one and a half days here do not do it justice, but we can say we have walked our feet off in our best effort to cover ground.
I confess to not having been so interested in much of the war history as a result of the bombardment of films and documentaries we have all been exposed to, but a walk through some of the landmarks in person does indeed shed a different light, and no visit here would be the complete without this side of the city's history. We spent the first half of the day walking the Unter den Linden and then the second half in the Mitte district taking in the National Gallery and the Pergamon on Museum Island. Regrettably, we did not make it to Auguststrasse - what is known as Art Alley, and is reputably the hub of the current arts scene.
"Deswegen muss ich nächstens wieder hin"
We had a nice personal note as well, visiting Mico's friends, Bernd and Constance at their summer home as we arrived yesterday. Along with a great evening of conversation, food and wine, we received half a dozen fresh chicken eggs which made a delicious gorgonzola omelet for our dinner tonight.
Mico has been functioning very well here speaking German, while the two of us switch back and forth between English and Finnish - and in my confusion half the time I answer in Finnish when someone speaks to me in German. Generally people just nod and smile.
"Kinder, schön war doch Berlin. Ich vergess' es nie".
Tomorrow - Prague!
Oh, and loved Lubeck!!
