Greece was incredible! I know i say that every place is just wonderful and beautiful but Athens was definitely a site to see and some place where you could go back and spend a lot more time than I was able to spend there! We got there Monday afternoon and just went to the area where our hostel was by to get food and go to sleep early because we had had such a long day of traveling. meghan and lauren, two girls we actually went to high school with, met us in Athens so we all went out to eat and then to sleep.
tuesday we went all over. it was crazy because the city had all of these ruins and all of this history, just planted on a regular city block. the city was just built around them and zoomed by them every day. We got to see the agora, which was very cool. i learned a lot about i during my great books class in high school, so to actually see it was hard to believe. we saw the temple of olympian zeus which was cool because one of the towers or whatever had fallen, and they let it lie just as it had fallen. It was so hard to comprehend everything we were seeing because it all seemed so surreal. We also saw the first olympic stadium. It was huge! it had the rings on it and everything, it was beautiful!! We saw the university, and the university library, churches, the tower of the winds, parliament, the site of roman bath, the national gardens (which were full of random zoos and ponds) and just huge ruins that randomly laid through the city streets. we experienced out first ever authentic gyros and loved them. nothing beats them! we walked through markets that were filled with fresh strawberries, coconuts, nuts, everything! it was wonderful!
wednesday morning we got up early to go to the acropolis. on the way up to the acropolis, there was various theatres, like the theatre of dionysos, the theatre of herodes, and the temple of asclepios. the tophad an incredible view. there was a lot of construction going on but it was still unbelievable. to know i was sitting and staring at the parthenon seemed very surreal. but it was incredible. everything looked just as you would imagine and it was hard to believe it was right there. after the acropolis, we hiked another mountain (literally) to a restaurant that overlooked the whole city. the view overlooked everything and you could see all of the ruins from the top. it was pretty neat!
that night, we found out there was a workers strike the next day, so the metro wouldnt be running. unfortunately, i left alone at 5 am to catch my flight so I got out how to get to the airport without paying 60 dollars for a taxi. thankfully, the buses were still running, so at 5 am, i left and took a taxi to the bus station and got to talk to my mom on the ride to the airport. thankfully, i made it and it was actually kind of fun traveling alone
now, i am back in hull until saturday when i fly to barcelona and do a tour around europe until march 31. i wanted to get sleep and do laundry so it has been nice:) but i will add more pictures from others cameras once i get back...but until then have a good 2 weeks!
