We headed to Franz Joseph on 13th Jan, the hostel we are staying at is really nice, small 4 bed dorms a 25 man hot tub and sauna. The weather was really bad, pouring with rain constantly was a bit worried as i am doing a trek on day 2 and dont really fancy being out all day in that.
Day 2 - the weather was a bit better, still raining but nit as bad. We met at the Glacier walk reception at 8am and were given our kits to put on, waterproof jackets and trousers, hat, gloves, woolley socks, boots and spikes then drove to the car park nearest to the glacier which was about an hour walk away. We put our spikes on our boots and headed up.
Our guide 'Karl' said it was better when it rained because it made the glacier look blue. It did look very blue and was really beautiful, there were loads of little ice cave bits which were cool and waterfalls which were really pretty. It was great but very scary at times though as our guide was cutting 'steps' as we went so it was a bit like rock climbing (which is scary enough) but this was on slippery ice with no ropes stopping you from falling!! Yes I did slip at one poing but not badly I just slid on my bum for a bit, I wasnt scared untill I did that but after was a different story!! Luckily though I didnt have any more slips and made it back 8HRS later in one piece.
Had a really great day but was absoloutley exausted, I have never walked so much in my whole life so when I got back had a drink inb the bar, had dinner and a shower then went to bed!!
Got up and had a really chilled out day in the spa, went for a walk and am now preparing myself for my sky dive which Kat and I are doing in 1.5hrs so will update on how that went soon!!!
