Disclaimer: This will not be an essay of epic proportions like the last few blogs. I don't have a lot to talk about and am tired and uninspired tonight!
With that said, we are now in Wellington. Tonight will be our 3rd night in New Zealand's capital city, which I must say is the quiestest capital I have ever been to. The population is something ridiculously small, which I have been told several times but cannot for the life of me remember.
The first day we spent travelling on the magic bus, passing through the National Park from Taupo where we did our epic Tongariro trek the day before. We were meant to be able to take photos of the same mountains, but due to it being ridiculously cloudy there weren't a lot of photo opportunities. We were quite lucky we did the trek on a reasonably good day! We did a fair bit of driving through some little towns, then arrived in Wellington. The weather managed to go from bad to worse over the day, and it was tipping it down by the time we got here, so we spent the rest of the day curled up on the sofa with a book/film!
Yesterday the weather was a little bit better, and we ended up going on a 'Wellington film tour' with a guy who was loitering around the hostel handing out free stuff (I had a nice free glass of wine tonight, thanks to a voucher, and a random glass of mulled wine at lunchtime, alcoholic much?). He was legit, not a dodgy odd man (I think!). He claimed to have been in Avatar for about 6 seconds, and that he was an actor. Wanted to believe him, but who knows? Everyone acts in Wellington! Anyway, he took us to some pretty cool places. We went to the Weta Cave, out the front of the Weta workshops. Anyone geeky will know that Weta are responsible for a lot of the cool bits of films like Lord of the Rings, such as the make-up, costumes and lots of the digital stuff. So that was pretty cool! We also drove past Peter Jackson's house(s) and saw the island where apparently a lot of stuff for King Kong happens, though I wouldn't know I haven't seen it! We also got driven to the top of Mt Victoria and had some really good views from the top.
Today we went to the Te Papa museum, which was awesome even before we went because it was free! It was a cool place though, lots of interactive stuffs. Bit disappointed by the giant squid though, it wasn't nearly as giant as I'd pictured! But still pretty giant in squid terms, hmm. There were lots of cool Maori things like the treaty of Waitangi and such, and Kaori trees and lots of stuffed Kiwis, didn't realise they were so big! So yeah, pretty cool day.
Tomorrow we are catching the inter-island ferry over to Nelson, on the north of the south island. Then the further south we go the chillier we will get! Hoping to start cheering up a bit also, been feeling pretty ridiculously homesick for the past few days. Hoping it's a bit of a halfway blip and will go away, just like it did at the start. Missing my Huw like crazy, especially, and sometimes just a little bit of space wouldn't go amiss, dorms don't really let you do that.
But yeah, all in all not a bad few days. That turned out longer than expected!
