We have now left Vang Vieng and are in Luang Prabang, it's hard to keep track of the places sometimes! Laos is going so quickly, we seem to be travelling an awful lot because we have some distance to cover in a very short time in this country.
So on Saturday night we ended up meeting up with our old Gap group entirely by chance yet again in Vang Vieng, in a bar on an island just opposite our hotel. To get to the bar you had to cross a rickety old bridge which was quite scary to get to the bar but a great deal more getting home after a few beverages!!
On Sunday morning (happy belated Easter by the way!) we got up early, totally disregarding the hangovers, to go to Poukham cave. It was a huge, dark cavern completely unlike the gaudy lit one from Halong bay. We went just the 3 of us and turned all our torches off and it was pitch black and slightly scary (yes I'm a wuss!). We had a good clamber in the cave then went to a lagoon outside of it and swam or in my case sat in a rubber ring for a while being lazy! Then in the afternoon we went tubing, which was the best thing I have done so far on this trip. You basically just sit in a very study rubber tyre and float down the river, constantly dodging plastic bottles on strings which the owners of the riverside bars throw at you to lure you into their bar! There were loads of adventurous things to do on the riverside. I went on a trapeze over the river which you drop off into the river and went down a river slide! Was too chicken to try the very high slide and trapeze but a lot of the group managed it and it was very amusing to watch some of the landings!
Todaywe took a 6 ½ hour bus ride to end up in Luang Prabang. It felt like a long time on the winding mountain roads and I was quite relieved to get here! We are staying in a simple guest house on the riverside and so far have had a wander through the night market which is amazing and huge, and had dinner on the side of the river. Tomorrow we are going elephant riding which I absolutely cannot wait for, hope it lives up to expectations J
