The Cambodian dancers were very good! They had more wardrobe changes than I have seen in my life. It was a very Indian style of dance, very slow, serene movements. A lot different from having the telly on in a bar anyway!
After the meal in the Temple club, where the dancing was, I did had my most odd traveller experience yet. Half our group went into the street and got a Dr fish massage, which is basically where you put your feet into a huge tank of water and sit and have a chat whilst these tiny fish do the equivalent of a pumice stone! Very strange but oddly relaxing experience, which I think I'll be quite happy to only try the once!
We have moved again, we are now in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital city. It reminded me a lot of Bangkok when we first arrived but it is definitely more relaxed and less touristy. The bus took 6 hours from Siem Reap, surprising how exhausting it is to sit on your bum on a bus! Yesterday night we went out for a meal as a group and Danni, one of the girls, met her friend who is living in Cambodia. We went to a local bar as she knew some people there, and ended up told many stories about life in Cambodia, accompanied by plenty of cheap beer.
Today we went to visit S-21 and the Killing Fields, which left me feeling a way I have never experienced before. Being told all of the history of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge was fascinating and horrifying. Visiting S-21, the prison, and the Killing Fields, which still house hundreds of mass graves, made me live out a part of history I have never even thought about. The Killing Fields houses a tall thin building with 17 tiers of bones excavated from the graves, in a glass case, which you can walk around and see. Definitely something I wasn't prepared for but have learnt a lot today.
After this, we went for lunch in Friend restaurant, an entirely charity organisation which employs former street children. We then went in search of a swimming pool, as it is still boiling here and we needed something for a stark contrast to this morning! We found one with a bar and loads of comfy sofas, and we got a free swim if we spent $5 in the bar, not too much of a feat!
Tonight was also a brilliant experience. We went to a local Cambodian home/school and met lots of the children there who practised their English with us. Then we went upstairs and had a huge buffet sitting on mats on the floor, a really good bonding experience. The dessert was a choice of watermelon or fried tarantula! A startling number of the group sampled a whole tarantula! Call me a wuss, but I went for the watermelon. There are many things I want to take away from this trip, but the aftertaste of spider is something I can happily live without.
Anyway, that's me for now, sorry if you've actually read through this far! Want to make sure I remind myself of everything before the days start merging! We are up bright and early tomorrow to travel to Sihanoukville and our first proper beach :)
