After a bad week we had the Whitsundys to lookforward to. We got the bus from Proserpine to Airlie Becah in the morning, the only thing is we didn't realise that there was a bus stop around the corner of the hostel. We walked all the was to the other end of town (it wasn't that far but with backpacks and a heavy cool bag it felt it). It then chucked it down with rain and we got soacked just crossing the road to get on the bus. It was embarrassing too when 2 other girls from our hostel got on (at the right stop) and they pointed it out. It rained the whole way there and we got wetter walking to our new hoste. All it seemed to do is rain and sadly there was not much to do when it did rain. We spent 3 nights at Airlie Beach before going on our Whitsundays trip. We stayed at Magnums in an 8 bed dorm. They called it a deluxe cabin, we called it a shed. It was nice enough though and we did enjoy sitting the porch outside for little picnics. There was however a very annoying frog living somewhere very close to us. It was so loud! Everytime new people moved in they wouldn't believe us that it was outside it was that loud.
We had some nice room mates whilest staying there. We went for a few drinks with Katrina (from Brighton). We went out for a couple but the night ended on the porch with a box of goon (horrible cheap wine) and 2 packets of crisps. Classy. That was also the night that we thought 2 gtirls from Liverpool had stolen our room key. They checked out in the morning so we lent them our key so they could still use the room and keep their bags there. We got back later but they hadn't put the key under Lou's pillow, so we assumed that they had forgotten and taken it therefore leaving us with the fine to pay. Later, we couldn't find our toothpaste either so they also got the blame for that. The toothpaste showed up after a few min of rummaging but the key didn't, we were so annoyed. When we were asked for ID to get into a bar later though, Lou didn't have hers because she handed it in as a deposit so had to go back for her passport, as she got there she also found the girls just about to leave! We thought they were leaving about 5 but it turns out they were getting the midnight bus. They hadn't stolen the key at all. Typically we were worrying for nothing.
Finally the day of our trip arrived. We had seen so many people come and go we were getting impatiant. Out boat was called Habibi and typical wee expected much more than what it was. It was still a nice boat though. We were given a twin room but it was so tiny and so hot. The top bunk in particular was small and closed in. It felt like being in a coffin and I ended up sleeping in the driving room with the crew it was that bad. It was also very rocky which made it hard to sleep. So many people felt sick on the second day! We were pretty lucky with our weather really though. The first day wasn't great but it was dry all of the second day when we had a full day on board, the sun even came out a couple of times. Then it rained the whole way back on the third morning.
Typically the part that we were most looking forward to was the food. Generally it didn't disapoint. But the woman who was cooking was a bit of a b**** and moaned if you took too much. She was not my friend. This just encouraged me and Lou to take more though haha.
The second day was our full day on the boat and our first stop was Whitehaven beach. Luckily the sun made a very brief appearance for us. We got into a little dinghy to be taken to the shore where we were to sit on one of the worlds top 3 beaches. The sand was so white and fine and the sea so clear and blue. It would have been nice to see the beach in proper sunshine. We were told that to go in the sea we had to put a stinger suit on to protect us. This provided entertaining photos if nothing else. We also got to snorkel twice on this day and once on the last morning. We became big fans of woggles when snorkelling as it made it so much easier than having to swim. Fir some reason we kept getting the giggles too and were two little girls laughing away. It was a bit freaky when there were so many fish around and swimming at you, some of them were huge! At one place we had to be dropped off and picked up by the dinghy. When we had had enough im sure they guy was taking the piss as he kept ignoring us and would't pick us up! He just kept driving past. When he finally decided to stop we had the giggles anyway but then it was so difficult trying to get back into the dinghy. I got stuck half way dangling over the edge. I looked like a beached whale! Another time when we had swam back to the boat we had to climb up onto a platform but it kept moving up and down with the waves and it was also funny watching us try and climb on to that. When we were finally on it we just sat there for a while as all the fish swam around us. It was also so funny being thrown up and down by the sea. I also had a little incidnet with my sunglasses. I leaned in for a photoand they fell off my head. I thought I had lost them forever but before you could blink the deck hand had dived in and saved them! Whoo. It was a good trip but it has deffinately put me off sleeping on a boat again!
When we got back to Airlie Beach we were planning on buying our greyhound ticket and leaving that afternoon. Our plans never work out! The earliest we could get a direct bus to Agnes Waters (also known as 1770) was in 2 days at midnight! We had no other choice so we had to spend 2 more nights at Magnums and then take the night bus. Magnums was so full that we had to book into a double room for the first night. We did have our own tv though and it was so nice after 2 dodgey nights on the boat to fall asleep watching top gear. We went out for something to eat with a couple we met on the boat too, and they treated us! Even better haha. We finally managed to spend a couple of hours by the lagoon too when the sun finally came out. Although this didn't last too long as the rain returned. Our last day felt like a lifetime too! It rained all day so we couldn't do anything and t hen to make it worse the bus was late and we didn't leave til 1am! Finally time to say bye to Airlie Beach.
