Kuala Lumpur is a little bit amazing!! We both loved it here!
When we first arrived we went to find our hostel. After staying in hotels over the last few weeks with a tv in our room, air-con and a private bathroom it was a bit of a reality check. The was a lovely smell greeting your entrance to the hostel which remained throughout the hostel. We went to go to our room, but the light didn't work so we were moved. Both of us were secretly hoping this meant an upgrade, it didn't. We were given a double bed which was so high off the ground you had to jump to get on it. By the time we had put our backpacks on the floor there was little room for anything else apart from the walkway to the door and worst of all, there was no air-con. We did have a lovely noisey fan though! We also had our first experience of a shared bathroom, it could have been worse. I was not a fan of all the hairs in the plug hole though. We were only going to be there for 2 nights so it wasn't too bad at least.
We pretty much dropped our bags and went straight out to make the most of our time there. We headed to Berjaya Times Square, an enormous shopping centre. It had 2 tall towers at either end and shops all along the middle. There was even room for a theme park inside! Even though it was so tall, we still had trouble finding it. Once you got closer you couldn't see where the towers were and we must have walked around 3 sides of it before finding where we were and the way in. Our first, Krispy Kreme! Yum! I picked up some vouchers for a free doughnut with any drink at the airport. Thinking we had a bargain in we went and ordered our drinks and doughnut. It was only when paying we realised that the doughnuts were actually only 50p so not really much of a saving. It still tasted great though. It was also nice to have a real fruit drink rather than cans of coke and sprite that we had been living off around the rest of Asia. For some unknown reason the orange tastes bad over here. We were a little gobsmacked when we saw how many floors there were and how big the place was. Although after a little while we did notice that there weren't many brand shops and did wonder where they all were.
We had decided that in the morning we would get up early to queue for the free tickets to go on the bridge to the Petronas Twin Towers. These free tickets are the only ones available and you have to get there early to get them. So we thought we would plan ahead and sort out the route we would need to take. As were about to do this we spotted Zara and Debenhams, so obviously had to take a look in there first. We were a little dissapointed though when we realised that the prices were the same as home, maybe even a little more expensive. I also went looking for some sunglasses hoping to find some a little cheaper. I found some lovely Armani ones, for 150 pounds. Not quite in my backpackers budget. So off we went again to find the towers. We thought we were following the signs to the towers, 1km it said. Well either we took a wrong turn or their distance is very wrong. Again, for something so tall, you would think it would be easy to find. In the end we were following the road signs which is probably why we ended up going too far because of the one-way systems. When we did finally get there we were impressed. They were soo big and soo shiney! We took the chance for a few photos and got some good ones after seeing how another person did theirs and copying. We couldn't get all the tower in before so we were pleased. We then went inside to find where we had to go in the morning. This is when we discovered the shopping mall inside. It had nearly every designer shop you could think of! Plus the cheaper shops for people like us. It was very impressive.
We then took our walk home, trying to remember the way so that we could follow it early the next morning. That evening went to Petaling Street, the main street in Chinatown (our hostel was also in Chinatown by the way). At first we weren't really enjoying the market but then we got into the swing of it. We had been looking raybans over the last few days and saying how much we hate fakes. We had talked about it so much it became a bit of a joke. But we got caught up in it all and ended up buying a pair each! I got bright yellow and Louise got peppermint green. We love them!! I then decided I wanted a yellow watch to match so the hunt began. We had some food whilst in Chinatown too. We had an amazing duck dish. It must have been good the fact that I am writing about it on here because its not really that interesting for you to know. But I suppose you do all know how much we love food. This was good duck. It was in a chilli sauce which was apparently a milder version for us. I wouldn't want to taste the full hot version. It was good though! Then off we went to our lovely little room for a great nights sleep, or not.
Alarms were set for 6.30am so that we could get in the queue for twin tower tickets at 7 (as the taxi driver had advised us). We got up at 6, faffed around for half an hour doing who knows what and finally left at 7, half an hour behind schedule. It took us about half an hour to walk there and we were not going to be happy if we didn't get tickets. There was quiet a long queue when we got there so we joined the back of it. Everyone was sat down and it was all fine. Then because they were running out of space for the queue we all had to stand up, bad idea. We were stood waiting for about 5min before I turned to Louise looking slightly green and shakey saying I didn't feel well. I sat back down on the floor, head on my lap and started to not only worry that I was going to pass out, but more importantly also worry about if I did how would I get my ticket!! Luckily tin towers mum came to the rescue. The woman behind us in the queue gave me a sweet and some crackers whilst Louise fetched some more water. This did the trick! I was up and feeling better just as the ticket counter opened. So it all worked out fine. Just to make sure I was ok for the rest of the morning we went to go and get a Mcdonalds breakfast. Defiantly felt better after that!
Ok im bored again, i'll finish this off soon xxx
Im back!!! Internet is expensive in Australia and New Zealand compared to Asia! Right so we went up the tower at 10.15. First we had to watch a video about the towers, although it was basically a promotional video for Petronas and not very interesting. The view was good, although we couldn't see as much as what I thought we would. There was a lovely park behind the towers though and you got a great view over that. We went and explored the park after the trip up the towers. It was really weird though as we started to notice people taking photos of us! One person even followed us inside and then asked if he could take our photo! We declined! It was very strange and it actually happened quite a lot. We wondered at one point if we looked famous because of our raybans but I dont think it was that. And Louise was called Lady Gaga by someone at the market?! Dont think it was that either. We spent quite a bit more time shopping and discovered a couple more big shopping malls which were great. It was a bit dissapointing that a lot of the shops were actually ones we already have at home and the prices were the same. Although the actual Malaysian shops were cheaper. In the evening we went and ate at TGI Friday's and it was soo nice! Huge plate fulls. After this we went up the sky tower to look out over the city. We wanted to get there when it was light but by the time we waited for the shuttle to take us up and we finally got inside the sun had set. Al;though it was a nice view you couldn't see too much and it would probably have been better in the daytime. We also gained entry to a weird little animal park which was full of snakes and rats basically. And there was also a double headed tortoise! It was very strange. And we got to go in a formula one simulator car to do a lap before you got kicked out and didn't even know where you finished. It was all a bit odd. It was a good day though full of food, a bit of sight seeing and some shopping!- comments
jackie Hi again Just one thing did you not know we have krispy kreme donuts, Debenhams and zara in England lol. The duck is perfect for you m'duck fits the vocabulary lol. Sounds more like your scene with all the shops although I am wondering whether you should invest in a compass to get your directions. Definitely seems like you are in a more modern place so glad you are out of Cambodia. Take care of yourselves love Jackie xxx
