BULA!
so we are on our last day in fiji now - how depressing! have had such an awesome week here! i guess it would be best to start at the beginning though.
i left off in rotorua and SO much has gone down since then. the day of my last message we went zorbing which basically was jumping into a massive rubber ball with loads of water and rolling yourself down a hill. sweet. a bit on the drenched side afterwards. then al managed to convince me to do a jet boat ride with him and got to say it was respectably good! unfortuately it was tipping it down so we decided to get us some food and some top trumps cards and head back to the van abd be boring all afternoon! was good fun! unfortaunteyl it kept raining and we were not up for getting out of the van to cook dinner so had to wait until 9 before we could get out to go to the loo or get dinner. grr. the next day ws much better so we went to the park in rotorua and saw loads of geysers and mud pools etc. this place was covered ibn the last eruption and so the whole place has such a strange environment. everything is so much richer in colour. so we hung out there on the kids playing equiptment and p[layed some ball before heading down to the lake front. once there we got a message from steve saying he had arrived in rotorua so we met up with him and his friends got some food then played touch rugby. even me. and i didnt even know how to throw a rugby ball until that morning. nightmare. then evening we started the drive up to auckland and stayed the night and some random campsite by a lake in a place called huntly. got up early the next moring and did the drive to auckland. once there we decided as it was a niice day we could sightsee.....or go see the new pirates of the carribean....obviously the result was going to the cinema and seeing one of the most awesome movies ever. well maybe not ever but it was pretty good. we found our way to another campsite and had a good sleep and an early start as we had to get the van back to the rental place by 10. unfortunately they tried to charge us extra for a slight issue in the van but we werent happy and then wicked campers decided all was good anyway.
auckland on saturday pretty much consisted of us starting out with such good ideas and expectations of the day. so we started to WALK to the auckland harbour bridge as a bungee jump off it just seemed like a good thing to do on a saturday. unfortunately it was ages away and apparantly you have to prebook so the afternoon pretty much turned into a sham of just wondering around. that evening al and i went to the minus 5 bar with a girl from our hostel. was awesome! everything is ice and they give you gloves and massive comfy coats to wear to stop[ you from getting hypothermia. unfortunately hannah didnt think things through andm decided to wear leggings. they give you little boots to wear but my entire ankles were visible so i pretty much had freezing ankles the entire time. all the ice sculptures in there were cool. and you can lick the ice sculptures without your tongue sticking. yes i tried. after this we met up with steve and his friends again and went to a few bars, did a bit of dancing and burning our hands with candles - dont ask - it seemed like a good idea at the time. no blisters though so all is good.
the next day was an early start as we got our flight to fiji. the flight was pretty straight forward and we arrived in nadi to be picked up and transferred to our hostel. once there we got some dinner - it was amazing! then pretty much headed to bed - having only had 3 hours sleep the night before! the next morning was anotyher super early start as we had to be at the marina for 8:30am and spent the morning on the boat before getting to nanuya lailai island at the top of the yasawas. we stayed at sunrise lagoon resort for the monday and tuesday night. unfortunately the wind was up on our suide of the island so that meant we had to trek across to the other side and back twice a day (coming back at lunch time) it was stunning though = the water was so clear. unfortunately there wasnt much to do though other than sleep on the beach opr hammock which was fine for me but al wasnt too impressed.
on wednesday we got the boat down to the naviti area of the yasawas where we got on the wanna taki boat (where we were to stay for the next two nights). first thing when we got there i managed to get roped into going to the closest island to play volleyball (and i officially suck) all was good though - worked up a nice appetite for dinner! that evening we got chatting to a few people on the boat and ended up having a few rum and cokes with them until about 1am. unfortunately i found out that rum does not agree with me when mized with the rocking of a boat so ended being up until 4:30am feeling incredibly ill (and no i was not drunk!!)
the next day we were up pretty early and spent the entire day mixing sunbathing with snorkelling and jumping off the boat (during which i decided to punch myself in the eye by accident...and it hurt!)so we were pretty waterlogged by the end of the day and i had seen my fair share of pretty fishes. however, decided to go for another snorkel before the sun came down which was a nightmare. it involved swimming from the boat towards the island nearby which was fine exce3pt for stupidlty strong currents on the way back mizxed with the fact that i could not see if there was a shark coming towards me. not fun! oh and little sea lice decided they wanted to bite me...a lot. arg. after dinner most people were upstairs having a few drinks but a few of us decided it was not a good plan so spent the evening watching the 300 on dvd followed by 'dude wheres my car'. gotta say i wasnt fussed on watching the 300 before but its such an amazingly well shot film. awesome.
friday morning was filled with more sunbathing and jumping off the boat. also by this point i was getting highly more impressed with my tan. the boat came to pick us up about 3pm and transferred us to our final island of south sea island. which was tiny. you could walk around the entire island in under 5 minutes. there was literally the hostel building, pool, volleyball court and that was that. had an amazingly good dinner (AGAIN!) before doing some crab racing (this was getting highly boring by this point as they had done this activity every night at every place we had stayed and everytime i had entered all my crab fancied doing was walking around in circles. arg. i met a girl from poland and a group of english guys and irish guys she was hanging out with and pretty much chatted with them all night - by this point al was into his book and was having a good read of that! the lady in charge (who i would like to add is actually insanely hilarious!) decided that the box game would be appropriate. so hannah won (i wont have it any other way) and got herself a free glass of wine....sweet! so spent the night with the group of people previously mentioned before jos (one of the englilsh guys) decided to mention he played guitar and has it with him...so we moved our party down to the beach (ie walked about 5 metres) and got some guitar playing on. this swiftly made the transition into singing all the disney songs we could thing of before heading to sleep.
saturday morning was spent being highly angry at the early morning wake up but getting over it by the fact that its amazingly sunny out (again!) so got myself to the pool. had a nice swim. then decided the sea was warmer so went for a snorkel with alex and george (two of the english guys i met the night before) unfortuantely the water was not particularly clear and sea lice liked biting me a lot here also. so gave up on the snorkelling and went in the pool again. about 10am we decided to go on the yellow submarine they had (cue getting the ipod out hand having a good listen and singsong to the beatles!) saw a bit more on this but not a great deal more fish. so spent the rest of the day playing beach volleyball then going for a swim and vice versa.eventually people began getting tired and going for sleeps on the beach.had such an awesome day yesterday though. and i blatantly had a sweet tan now! have never had this deep a tan and its so exciting! so we fly to LA tonight and thats about all there is to say. its nearly midday so we are heading back to the hostel for a swim/sleep then getting ourselves on the plane for a stupidly long flight (on which we know about 30 people! loads of people we met ou the islands are on the flight as well as gary and shaun who were on the whitsundays with us and we saw randomly yeserday!)
the next blog i guess will be next week - by which time i will hopefully be safely back at good old westwind in oregon for some more summer camp fun! sweet!
