Its been a few weeks since I did my last blog entry and since then we have taken some of the longest journeys i think ever existed pretty much but we're now at my very close family friend's house in KL, Malaysia and it feels like absoloute luxury.
From Ubud we got the bus to Lovina in the north of Bali. It is an area famous for dolphins so after finding a cheap hotel (more mosquitos got into that room than i thought possible) we got up at 5.30am to go and see some dolphins for James' birthday. Despite the horrendous rain, we got really lucky and saw loads of little dolphins. However after this we got straight back on a bus to Seminyak as there really wasnt that much to do in Lovina, especially with the horrendous weather.
In Seminyak the rain did not stop. We spent most of the day trapsing round trying to find somewhere cheap and with rooms to stay. In the end we settled for somewhere which im not even sure was any form of hostel but it had a bed. A bed that was however crawling with bed bugs. James woke up with his arms covered in bites and i woke up with my face and neck covered in bites, an attractive look.
Because of the horrendous weather in Bali we decided to head to Java early so we could meet up with a lovely dutch girl we had met on the Gili's, Eva, and her friend Louise. The longest journey ever began with a taxi to the bus station in Denpasar, a bus that was supposed to take 3hours to the ferry (it took 6) a ferry across to Java and then another very long bus journey up to Probolingo in Java. It was here that we were meeting Eva and Louise and were planning on seeing the sunrise over Mount Bromo. We got to our hostel about 12.00 and got up late the next day to explore the town. I can officially say Probolingo has nothing. Just lots of staring Indonesian men shocked at just how pale two people can be. The next morning we got up at 2am to go up to the volcano to see the sunrise. About 3/4 of the way up, our driver decided the car couldnt go up the steep hills anymore..he discovered it helps to do a hill start in first gear. We did get a bit of luck when we got up there (eventually as it nearly killed me), however it was still reasonably cloudy so we didnt go up mount Bromo as all we would have been able to see is white clouds. We went back to Probolingo and got on another long coach journey to Solo, in central Java. We got there after about 9 hours in a coach, and went straight to bed. We got up the next day, and went to see Solo which had some interesting palaces and markets but we did get harrassed by the indonesian people being so shocked at how white we were. We stayed another night in a nice hotel and the next day headed to Yogjakarta to meet up with Eva and Louise.
Yogjakarta was really good. We stayed in a really lovely homestay with a big group of people we had met. We saw Borobudur and Prambanan temples on our first full day there which involved getting up at 4am but it was definitely worth it. Borobudur was amazing. The next day, James, Eva, Louise and I went on rafting and cave tubing day which was so much fun. Could have spent the entire day going down the river, but maybe not in the cave as it was filled with hundreds of bats. On our last full day in Jogja, we saw the town and did some much needed shopping (i seem to have no t-shirts, ever). It was really sad to leave Jogja and all the amazing people we'd met but it was time to start our long journey to Melaka.
We got up at 4am to get a plane to JAkarta, hung around the airport for 8hours, got a flight to KL, a bus to KL Sentral, a train to the coach station and a 2hour bus to Melaka. After 20hours of travelling we made it to Melaka and found a hostel to stay the night in. The next day we moved to a nicer and cheaper hostel and discovered that most of the things to do in Melaka is eat..perfect. We tried traditional Noynya foods and James even had dumplings for breakfast (he's obsessed). In Melaka town there is quite as much to see in the days and we had first thought, but that was more than made up by the fact we were there at a weekend so we got to see the Jonker Street Night Market. Its basically a whole road shut off so hundreds of stalls can set up selling weird trinkets and even weirder foods. It was well worth a visit, I loved it, and if you get the chance i strongly advise going.
After 4nights in Melaka we headed back to KL and we are now staying here for up to a week before we make our way to Thailand. Its lovely staying with family for me, and later me and James are picking up Katie from the bus station, I am so excited. Will hopefully update again soon.
Lots of love
