We landed in Denpasar, Bali a week ago now, and got a taxi to Kuta which is the nearby touristy town. The taxi let us out "down the road" from our accomodation for the night..an hour later after walking through Kuta in jeans and hoodies with massive backpacks on our front and back, we found it.
The next day, we got a bus to a small town called Padang Bai to get a fast boat over to the Gili Islands. It was the worst boat journey ever.. I dont get sea sick but it was so choppy. I was sat next to these guys who were hungover, 3 out of 4 of them threw up... When we got to the Gili Island we were staying on, Gili Trawangan, we spent about another hour trying to find somewhere nice to stay. The Gili Islands are amazing, there are no cars just horse and carts and bikes and the beaches are something you see in a film, especially when you walk round the other side of the island (yes i have done lots of walking). The weather wasnt great though and there was a bad storm which didnt seem to be going away so unfortunately we werent gonna be able to leave Gili on the fast boat anytime soon.
To leave Gili, the company we got our boat tickets from were taking us to Lombok, which is 15min away from Gili on a boat, then to the ferry in minibuses and we'd get the ferry back to Bali..only issue we found when we got to the ferry port was that there were no ferries for 4days at least due to the wind and choppy sea. So with our new Swedish friends and a Dutch girl we'd met in Bali we went to the airport, booked the quickest way back..very expensive plane tickets to Java then back to Bali 3hours later. James slept for a bit in the airport, then some nice policemen let us stay in their offices on the airport grounds so that we and all our stuff would be safe. 30hours after leaving Gili, we got back to Bali. A short taxi ride later we arrived in the town of Ubud.
Ubud is lovely. Our room has a terrace that looks out over rice fields and literally all you can see is green. Today we got some bikes to cycle to a nearby temple where we ended up walking through jungle to another hindu temple, I was so hot I honestly looked like a tomato. After cycling back we decied to go on a walk in a nearby town. When discovering hundereds of stairs down a valley i was less keen but we walked through rice fields and jungle and past a huge river (all in broken sandals and shorts). The views from the top had been breathtaking though.
Heading up to North Bali tomorrow to hopefully see some dolphins and then after Balinese new year we're gonna head over to Java.
Having the best time (minus sleeping on an airport floor) but missing everyone at home lots. Lu i promised to mention you so here you are :).
I'll update soon, hopefully more on time than Katie.
Lots of love
