Lucy & Hannah's Adventures!
Hi all!
And Greetings from Thailand! After a week of fun we are embracing the thai experience! Having spent a stuffy first night in Bangkok in a cheap hostel off Kao San road, we soon moved to the opposite end of the accommodation scale, otherwise known as the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza...yeah baby! Han's friend Alex managed to get us a *free* room on the executive club floor, so we were greeted like royalty from our taxi (thank god we didn't get a tuk-tuk as we had planned!) and spent a luxurious 2 nights enjoying a gorgeous ensuite, petal-ladened pillows and free chocolates! Although several people had warned us that we might hate Bangkok, this made it a lot more bearable! ;)
As a city it's extremely smoggy, but we had fun wandering the winding backstreets and markets, where there are a ridiculous number of mangy cats and dogs wandering around, and you definitely want to avoid the yellowish puddles(!) but the people are all very friendly! (And absolutely love their royal family). We met some hilarious wannabe lady-boys at Pat-Phong, who taught us some of our extended thai vocabulary! On our first night we thought everyone was asking us if we wanted to see a table tennis show, but we naive little bunnies soon realised what 'Ping-pong' actually meant! Oh dear! Aside from that Alex tried to sell us for a tuk-tuk (sooo not a fair swap) and we formed a band in a random Mexican cocktail bar where the staff found it highly amusing when I told them I was in fact Juicy Lucy! We saw a good few temples too, including Wat Pho with its enormous reclining buddha (and where I had to put on an extremely fetching bright orange superman-style cloak as my shoulders weren't covered...no skin in holy places!) and also bartered for an amazing boat trip. We went up the canals off the river to see the real Bangkok, with its houses backing onto the canal and children swimming and fishing in the polluted water.
One thing I definitely do not enjoy here is the driving! No one wears seatbelts and there are absolutely no rules on the road...except that you should always undertake, never indicate and never take your foot off the accelerator. I've lost count of the number of near-death experiences we've had but even from the airport the driver had to do an emergency brake at about 120 mph..!
Having lived it up in Bangkok we flew to Phuket where we spent a relaxing few days with Guy and his brother (again lapping up the 5-star resources while we can, thank you Guy!!) We had a crazy rock-climbing adventure to get to our own Paradise beach, did some kayaking in ridiculously shallow water, and sampled a great cocktail called 'f*** Off', which the barmaid absolutely loved shouting back at least 3 times every time we ordered one! We are now enjoying the sun and beautiful surroundings on Koh Phi Phi...It's absolutely gorgeous here, you feel a bit like you're walking around on a film set, but unfortunately once you enter the town it's more like a westerner's holiday resort!
We had our first experience of a thai massage last night...in fact we thought we'd asked for an oil massage but there was some definite yoga-style contortion involved! My personal highlight was when my friendly-looking masseuse gently shook my head telling me to 'relax' and then jolted it sideways to click my neck, before cackling at my reaction! Oh and Han and I now have very amusing matching massage outfits! (Hot pants and tops) which have gone down a treat!
We're off island-hopping and snorkeling tomorrow, which will include visiting The Beach (from the film) and Monkey Island, and then it's off to Ko Samui and Ko pan-gnan in time for the next Full Moon Party! Looking forward to experiencing some more 'buckets' there (quite literally a sea-side bucket filled with a bottle of samsun whisky, red bull-with or without amphetamines-and coke...bring it on!)
Keep sending all your emails and hope everyone's well!
Lots of love and spicy thai kisses,
Lucy xxx
