Getting settled in!
Queenstown, New Zealand
So I touched down in Christchurch at around half 3 Monday afternoon. After absolutely cacking my pants getting through the NZ border I jumped in a taxi and got myself to the Jailhouse... My hostel for the night. Lets just say they definitely showed the historical jail pretty well, leaving everything pretty much how it was back in the day! My single room was a cell with a bunk bed, toilets & showers were seperate. Luckily I was only staying one night and after a very long flight stopping in Dubi, Bangkok & Sydney, all I really wanted was a bed to sleep in! All joking aside the Jailhouse was a pretty cool place, full of youngsters and travellers from what I could see so if I was there a few nights I'd no doubt meet a few people :) I'd reccommend it anyway!
So I'm wide awake at 3am, jetlag is a b****! ... 6am I make my way back to the airport for my last flight from Christchurch to my destination :) ... Queenstown!
The apartment is beaut! The picture is the view from the living room window :) just when I thought it couldn't get any better I take a trip into town. I have been told by the bro that hitch hiking is a common thing here, and its easy to catch a lift! However, I decided to take the bus this time! Turns out you don't even have to wack your thumb out to get people to notice you, sitting at the bus stop is enough. Some guy who paints christmas decoration on windows of business's gives me a ride... I must admit at first I was a little aprehensive about the whole thing, but seen as the bro says everyone does it I figured.. what the hell. So I get into his s***hole of a van that stinks of paint and the introduction starts. Kiwi's are very laidback, chilled, friendly people... & if wer talking about this particular guy.. can't get enough words out in one breath!
He starts to tell me about his job, how he goes around the country as an artist who paints on windows, wacking out the photo album of his work, which I'm not gun lie was pretty impressive! Kind of like a the stained glass look... Christmas trees, santa, presents etc. Basically, to cut a long story short, his blocker (an employee who blocks in the colour of his artwork) had left him and he had basically picked me up to offer me a job! By this time we had arrived into town, with a few stop offs at pubs/hotels etc for him to show me his work (his insistence not mine). He insisted I had a go at blocking, so stopping at a business in which he did a christmas tree with presents in the window, he grabbed his paint and showed me what to do, 'here, no you have a go, its real easy.'
So here I am blocking in this Christmas tree on the inside of a business window. RANDOM! ... He gave me $20 and asked me if I fancied the job. I passed seen as his offer was I'll pick you up, we'll travel around the country painting and I'll bring you back for Christmas... No thank you.
Atleast I had earned $20 and got a free lift into town! Not bad for a first day ey!?
I got my bank account sorted and enrolled at the job agency, had a walk round town and decided to head back... I walked around the edge of the lake. Which is undescribable, wasn't quite sure if I was heading in the right direction for the apartment bus I didn't really care. It was gorgeous. To give you a feel of just how beautiful... There's a girl sat on a rock, feet paddled in the lake, drawing. I didnt blame her the view was amazing and the sun was shining.
It took me a good hour and a half to walk back, luckily I had come to a familiar place so I was walking the right way. I got back to the apartment, had a nice cool orange juice :) and here I am.. on the balcony looking at that view.
Eventful first day, I love it. Think I'm going to really fit in well here :)
Going to Wanaka tomorrow, drive round on a golf buggie while the bro and the guys play golf! Its meant to be nice again :) ahhhh.
Ill keep you posted :) chow for now! x
