Ok, so I'm not so good anymore at keeping you all updated. The package that I thought was lost magically arrived despite the lack of any coherent address. Am improving in Spanish slowly but surely, but have my first test tomorrow so we'll see how I feel after that. Am learning my way around the city more as well. Figured out the bus system, as well as the taxis. Discovered a new favorite fruit I believe is called Momochinos?? which looks like a sea urchin with a slug inside, which really doesn't sound appetizing, but is quite deliciouse.
Last weekend went to Monteverde Cloud Forest. 5 hour bus ride to go 20 km, so you can imagine how bad the roads were. They passed out motion sickness pills before we left and at times I'm surprised we didn't tip over. Very pretty though, and accompanied by good music and views of waterfalls and tropical thunderstorms, it really wasn't so bad. It was my housemate, Marcina's, birthday so that night had a party in the girls' room who were next to us (Chelsea and Lucy). Went on a canopy tour Saturday morning which was a combination of ziplines, hanging bridges and tarzan swings through rainforest and over canons. That afternoon hung out by the pool until had to go inside to let the rain pass. Were alerted by thousands of birds when the rainstorm was over and then went on a walk to look at local art houses, streams and sunsets. That night had another party in a room that we rented out. Was woken the next morning by Lucy sticking her hand through the window and pulling open the curtains, which I think normally would have scared me but at the time I was too tired to care. Turns out the power had gone out though so if i hadn't woken up that way I might have slept all day.
Went to the national rainforest reserve. Hiked to a waterfall, almost stepped on a centipede, walked to a hanging bridge and returned back just when it started pouring. Our bus had a flat tire so had to wait around for it to get fixed and then headed back to San Jose.
Yesterday went downtown again with some other girls from my program (Melanie and Kristin), found a cafe to study in before going to an annual choir festival at the national theater. Ranges of choirs singing anywhere from religious songs, to the Cucaracha about someone not being able to walk because they smoke too much weed, to a song making fun of Americans and how they can't dance. Was supposed to meet some other people there but they never turned up and found out today that there appears to be another national theater where they ended up going and seeing strange skits about domestic violence.
Today was a holiday called Celebration of the Cultures, so we only had class in the morning and then went to watch people sing, belly dance and play the bongos while eating different national foods.
Tomorrow leave for Puerto Viejo. There's a Carnival in Limon that we will probably go to for the day but then where we're staying it turns out there's some huge Reggea festival, so we'll probably spend Sunday there.
I'll fill you in when I return. Cioa.
