Hey Everyone!
Sorry about the delay, just been having a crazy few weeks!
So after "Fun Down Under" I was going on surf school. After a bit of speed packing and getting up after the trusty old alarm failed to go off, me, Heather and Patrick left our hostel and waited at the bus stop for our surf school. We did the normal meet and greet and there seemed to be loads of us, our bus drove up and out walked theee most typical surfer dude you would picture, it was amazing, got a blast of Australia right there.
We drove to our cabins in Seals Rock where we would spend the next couple of nights and it was absolutely beautiful, set in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by forests with kangaroos and horses running all around the place, we were staying in little wooden cabins and had a swimming pool and chill out area, I could tell it was going to be a good week.
In the afternoon we set off for our first beach, got our sexy wetsuits on and carried our surfboards down to a deserted beach which stretched for miles, it was absolutely beautiful, we lined up our surf boards and had our first lesson on the basics, it became clear very soon on the quality of the lesson we'd had last week was pretty poor so there was still hope for me and Heather. We surfed for a few hours, attempting to stand up and then went back and settled in, our room had Swedish, Dutch and German people in and for the first time so far the English were in the minority!
We all went to the bar for tea and had thee most amazing macaroni cheese in the world, it gave us all a blast from home, and the best thing was that as there were about 100 of us, the females got to go up first and even better being the only veggie meant I got my food first each time, bonus, we just spent the evening chatting to everyone, I got to know a really nice Canadian couple and it was a really nice atmosphere.
The next morning we were woken up by the surfer dudes and went for round 2 surfing, people were standing up and me and Heather were doing some pretty amazing wipe outs...I couldn't even stand up properly on the sand let alone on the water so there was no hope! But i kept at it, we had a really good picnic on the beachside, did some more surfing in the afternoon and then stopped off at a bowling green for a beer and relax, was a pretty amazing day.
Then for the evening, we had some good old mass drinking games, we all pitched in together and had about 25 jugs of Sangria and beer to get through between about 10 of us, the first "warm up" involved making the longest chain of clothes in your team, so bras and trousers and everything were coming off! We played an attempt at flip cup with about 50 drunk people so the rule explaining didn't quite happen there and then it turned into a pool party, you couldn't get any more surfer party than that!
The next day we packed up and left the cabins, some a little more hungover than others! We went to our 3rd beach, which wasn't quite as nice as the sun wasn't really out and there was sea weed absolutely everywhere you couldn't jump on your board without getting attached to the ground every second! But something clicked and I was standing up riding the waves to the shore which was an amazing feeling, it's great fun when you can actually do it!
Our day was cut short when one of the instructors and a few other girls realised we were riding the same wave as 2 reef sharks, which meant the big ones were coming!!!! Scary stuff, we knew something wasn't quite right when all the instructors suddenly put all their body parts on the boards!! So instead of surfing we ended the day at Kylies Munchies for thee biggest "small" portion of chips any of us had ever seen. We went to a pub in the evening and demolished a crazy amount of pizza; the pile of boxes was swaying dangerously! Then made our way to "Spider Lodge" where we'd be spending the evening, the bus trip to the lodge involved a lot of alcohol which was a main theme for the week, there were body shots being done hanging off the roof and tequila shots in the eye! Ended up people being realllly drunk by the time we got there. We were all a little bit nervous seeing as we'd heard so much about the biig spiders found in Spider Lodge hence the name, but we actually lucked out with our room. I started off in one with about 6 really drunk really rowdy people then managed to find a group of sober people so we stuck together and managed to end up with the best room, ensuite and everything and not a spider in sight so we were happy. We watched Juno that night in the cinema room snuggled up on sofas which was a nice break from the partying we'd done so far in the week.
On the fourth day I was loving the fact that I could do it so was making the most of the time out in the water, we had a picnic lunch again and then did a bit of shopping, Nass our surf instructor was also telling us all about his shark attack stories and surfing experiences, so it was a really chilled out day.
We had the evening in a hotel that night, had a whole floor above a pub, BBQ in the evening followed by drinking games of course and then a "house party" on the balcony to finish the night off!!
Our last day was more chilled out, but within half an hour I got my first surfing injury of the week when my elbow decided to get caught between my surfboard and one that was coming about 20 mph towards me! So I had to sit and watch the rest of the afternoon with a surfboard shaped dent in my arm, the others had a surfing competition which was entertaining to watch, I now have a nice scar down my arm so I'm taking the chance to call myself a true surfer chic!
We packed up and headed for Byron, our week had taken us up beaches from Sydney to Byron so it was an amazing way to break up the east coast journey. I had a bit of shock when I got to Byron having to pay for accommodation- the first time since I'd left England so the funds are going to go down from now on. We went to Cheeky Monkeys that night to finish the week off- the waitresses were all wandering around topless with their flags painted on their chests and there were competitions throughout the night, which mainly involved taking clothes off. We had our own little section which was cool and indulged in a $2 meal! (About 1 pound) and it was actually really good! Nicole and a few others ended the night by getting their boobs painted and we danced on the tables all night.
It was an absolutely brilliant week, mainly of surfing and partying but I can't even describe how good the atmosphere was, possibly even the best week so far, just got the next bit of the east coast to look forward to! x x x
