Carlos Paz was nothing like the brochures and the brochures weren't that good. Lonely Planet describes it as a little slice of Vegas but we would describe it as a little slice of Shannon dumped in Southern Texas with two casinos added.
When we told the guy at the information centre that we couldn't afford the Hurlingham Hotel he read us like a book 'ah you want one star' and thus we were booked into the Miril Hotel. The Miril Hotel was the kind of place you'd only expect to stay in if you were hiding out following a bad drug deal in Arkansas. Hamsah loved it! (don't be fooled - if there's hot water she's a one star gal).
First on our list of to do's was a visit to the much talked about clock tower, this is THE must see in Carlos Paz. As with the beaches, only photos can do justice to the clock tower that greeted us following the 30 minute trek in the sweltering heat. To be fair there was also a plastic donkey next to the clock tower that you could chose to be photographed with for a fee.
[Photo]The final straw was when the casino refused us entry on account of our jandals while seemingly turning a blind eye to the attire of some of the vegas grannies flooding through the doors; and since we weren't in the market for a fanny pack one night was enough.
Unlike Carlos Paz, Alta Gracia didn't have brochures[Photo]but if it did it would have lived up to it's representations. It's a beautiful picturesque village about an hour out of Cordoba and set amongst the mountains - or as we would call them - hills. It also had some interesting museums and history including the Che Guavara museum which is set in the house he grew up in as a child.
If that weren't enough the standard and variety of food was a step up from what we'd encountered so far.
