Lorna and Kev's slightly extended holiday
we have a nice long flight to singapore Which was delayed by the ground crew, so we landed at midnight an couldnt get the metro which we had planned. The very nice people at Tree In Lodge were kind enough to wait up for us with a warm welcome at 1:30am. One good thing about the delay was we got to see the night life of singapore, with its illuminated and all the food stalls were packed everyone was eating walking around generally having a good time.
After 20 hours of being awake we couldn't bring ourselves to join in and wanted to just go to bed. (old age maybe setting in). The next morning we still felt a little tired so we used the facilities (free breakfast, tea and internet) to plan the next stage to get us up to the cameron highlands. When that was booked and we felt re-fuelled the marina was on our first day trip.
Singapore is such a nice, clean and crazy place to be, the fines they have are brilliant boarding the insane but this keeps the county in amazing condition. Here are some of the rules.....
1. No chewing gum in public - $1000 fine
2. No littering - $500 fine
and then our favourite.....
3. Not flushing a public toilet after use $200!
there are machines everywhere so you can pay the fine asap.
This sounds crazy, but it makes Singapore one of the cleanest, safest places to be. The buildings and structures are amazing, but they give you the feeling of "look how brilliant we are". Singapore has had massive ecommeny growth over the last 5 years and its a small country with big ambition.
When you stop looking up and down alleyways, in side random buildings you see the old singapore with its lovely people, restaurants, shops selling everything (the biggest Asian martial arts dvd section ever!) You find the old singapore dotted around on the outskirts, like Bugis, chinatown and little india. Every street you walk down you get wiff's of amazing food, shops selling everything including the kitchen sink.
On our last day we decided to kill the time by going to the ZOO. lorna doesnt like zoo's due to caging animals for money but she made me happy by agreeing to go. the Zoo is set in 220 acres of land and comes with its own lake, the biggest in singapore. The animals were all looked after quite well and the highlight well 2 highlights were seeing white tigers and being stood 2 yards away from an orangutan. bloody camera had a smudge on it so you could see the little guy that well.
The pigmy hippo's were strange as they look fake but they love dancing around on the bottom of the pool. we still have a list to do as people say you can see singapore in 3 days but thats not true. we could have easily spent 1 week or even 2 just to see and sample everything and basically eat all the nice food.
To do list....
1. Eat Chili crab
2. see little india
3. botanic gardens
4. sky tower park
5. Marina when its dry
6. C.B.D
7. Ducktours (woohoo)
8. Civilaztion Museum
9. more food!
