November 23 - December 2, 2013
We spent nine days in Vero Beach. We had not intended spending this much time in one place on the way south, but the weather was not in our favor. We did lots of socializing, shopping, and shopping some more. We also toured the area a little bit. It was a convenient place to be stuck but we were glad to move on. We had planned on leaving on December 1, but at 3 am, it started raining and rained all day preventing us from moving on. We have traveled in rain before, but this wasn't mist or light rain, this was torrential rain. We all stayed in our boats until the afternoon when it finally let up. We worked on the main sail as it gotten stuck in the in mast roller furling again and we wanted to make sure we would be able to have it in working order.

We left Vero Beach this morning only traveling 41 miles to Jupiter, FL. It was an uneventful day. Last Flight Out stayed behind to make a return to Radio Shack so they were about an hour and a half behind us. They made it to the anchorage before sunset which is always a good thing.

Today we only traveled 13 miles to North Palm Beach. This was a nice anchorage with a not so nice dinghy area. Publix (grocery store) was close as was West Marine, Tuesday Morning, and Steinmart. We shopped mostly but didn't buy. We ended up renting a car here as our propane tanks had been recalled, unbeknownst to us, so we had to purchase new ones and have them filled. Silver Lining had to have their propane tank recertified, and filled. Last Flight Out had issues with their generator that needed a new part and they had to replace the alternator they brought with them on the engine. We can't leave Scandia out. They needed a new toilet from West Marine.

Since we had the car, we decided to go to Radio Shack to get a fitting for our external antennae for our SSB radio so we could get better reception. Arne and Bev on Scandia needed a new SSB radio so they went with us. They decided to also buy a new camera while they were there. Elaine and Karl on Silver Lining needed to go to the customs office at the cruise terminal to get fingerprinted for their re-entry into the US. While Elaine and Karl were at customs Mark and I went to the Scuba store to shop for a new short wet suit for me. After we picked up Elaine and Karl, we stopped at the business where Paul, on Last Flight Out, had ordered his generator part (raw water pump) and found out the part was not on the truck and it would be the next day, maybe, before it would be there. So it was decided to drive to Fort Lauderdale (an hour each way) to pick up the part to ensure its arrival. It was a very full day and we were glad we had the car available to us.

Travis' 30th Birthday!! (our youngest son) Happy Birthday!!
We had planned to have breakfast at Dunkin Donuts this morning and all of us ladies were so looking forward to it, but Paul on Last Flight Out decided we needed a captain's meeting on the boat to decide on our next move. We decided to move to Lake Worth/Palm Beach, so we could leave tomorrow for Fort Lauderdale. The weather looked good for sailing so we were finally going to make the run in the Atlantic. The move to Lake Worth was only 5 miles, so Mark and I stayed behind to make a final run to West Marine, Publix, and Tuesday Morning for things we forgot about yesterday. Silver Lining and Last Flight Out were stopping to fuel up, take on water, and get rid of trash. Scandia went ahead. When we got to Lake Worth, we had another meeting in the evening to finalize our plans for the run to Fort Lauderdale.

Mark wanted to get up at 3:00 AM to leave so we left out ahead of everyone else for Fort Lauderdale. The wind didn't turn around like it was supposed to, so we motored, with our main up for stabilization. It was a washing machine in the Atlantic and made for a very rough ride. We made it to Fort Lauderdale by 11:00. The rest of the boats made it by 2:30. We are moored at Los Olas Marina mooring field where the rich and really rich have their boats and also live.
We met up with a couple we met in Marathon in April. They are going to the Bahamas to but not until January. They are having work done on their boat. Something happened to it when they were sailing home in the Gulf Stream, so they are having it pulled out of the water.

We took two of our dinghy's (all 8 of us) up the New River through Fort Lauderdale today. That was an experience and we were all glad we did it. The houses were absolutely beautiful. It was Sunday and all the locals use the river for site seeing as do the tourists, so it was very crowded. They have lunch cruises, river taxis, and the Jungle Queen going up and down the river with the tourists. While we were up the river we docked the dinghy's to walk around and do the tourist thing. It was a great day as we finally have arrived to the sunny weather. It is been sunny and warm for 2 days now and we are soaking up the sun and warmth.

We decided this morning that we would move to Miami because the weather window to cross to Lucaya, Grand Bahama closed. We will go to Miami tomorrow. If the window remains open for the weekend, we will cross to either Bimini or go all the way to Nassau. Today we walked to downtown Fort Lauderdale for exercise. We had Working Cow ice cream and waffle cones for lunch. That is a first for us as we generally eat more healthy.

Susan Love all the news! Thanks for the updates on everyone. New toilet for Scandia?:)
Beverly Myrseth It was not much more expensive to buy a new toilet than buy the repair kit. Besides, since we have 2 heads, we wanted to buy 2 repair kits but West Marine only had one, so the next best thing was a new toilet for Bev.
Susan And you deserve it, Bev!
irene v. Great to see you're moving along nicely........nothing new to hear about things going wrong with boats! Guess you can never be 100% prepared. Good to have other boats along to help out. Really, really, cold here and rainy. Little bits of sun then torrential rain and wind. Quite yucky. Good to hear from you.
Dottie Giersch Just read you update as we have been dealing with Brian's Mom who is in the hospital and not doing well. Sounds like the group is staying together and you all are expereinecing some minor problems but nothing that you all can' handle. I hope the weather stays nice for you and you make your crossing soon!
