Landing in Vienna
Vienna, Austria
Harry - Yesterday we got off the plane in Vienna after a long flight. Unfortunately the luggage got off in London. But the airline found them and sent them to our hotel only a few hour late so we are pretty pleased re that! Today we have traversed Vienna and had a great day getting over the jet lag. The day has been fine and sunny and 18 degrees. The highlight was probably the Belvadere which was given to Eugenie the Prince of Savoy by a grateful nation for leading the Austrian army to 7 victories.
Althea - Three Stentorian cheers! We are back in Europe. We arrived in Vienna yesterday after three 'hops': Sydney to Dubai; Dubai to London; and London to Vienna. Gemma is with us, and Amber and David and David's parents fly from Sydney to Rome today. They plan to spend quite a bit of time in Italy, including several days in Bellagio on Lake Como, and then meet up with us in Amiens in France on Monday, 22 April.
We had a bit of drama yesterday in Heathrow, pelting through Terminal 3 in order to make our connecting flight to Vienna. Fortunately we made it onto the plane but our luggage was left languishing in London: a dreadful thought on several counts, especially considering that all of Harry's shirts for the Sydney Male Choir tour (April 22 to May 12) and beyond (Germany and Belgium on business) were magnificently pressed and packed to perfection in his bag. Thank God, the three Halliday Kathmandu bags were located, rushed to Vienna and delivered to our hotel. When we came back from our excursion into the heart of the city (we were keeping awake so that we would sleep during the 'proper' night) our bags were in our hotel rooms. I was almost tempted to hug them! A bit extreme, I know, but the thought of having to go hunting through Vienna for a range of garments for people who are like the sons of Anak (a very tall man to whom my father would refer when he was speaking about his Danish heritage) brought me no joy.
The clock in the old church next to our hotel has just struck 6:15 am. After a vegetarian dinner last night (thanks to Harry's research) I was practically in a coma, so I went to bed at about 8:00 pm. I have slept for about seven hours so am ready to embrace another Vienna day. There is some inexplicable charm about cobbled streets and church spires and flowers for sale on a street corner.
