San Ignacio, Belize 3rd April to 6th April
Collectivo bus to the border 30 Q and took 2 hours, it was very hot and full on the collectivo . We were lucky to have the back seat near the window so had ventilation. The poor girl at the other end of the back seat was travel sick, it's amazing how a baby wipe and a plastic bag can be helpful. Border crossing was easy, we then caught a taxi to San Ignacio only 8 miles and cost $6 belize each. Left at 12noon and arrived at 3.30. Checked in and had a recce round.
J&RGuest house. Double room with shared facilities. $15US per night breakfast included. Was a small room with a very soft old bed that was very uncomfortable, so we didn't get much sleep. House owned by John and Rose, John used to be a tour guide and so was very helpful and could get us discounts on tours and the car hire. He admitted to loving history and so was very knowledgeable, although quite opinionated. It made the stay feel like visiting your parents or grandparents.
Wednesday 4th April
Actun Tunichil Mukna (ATM) caves leave at 8.15 and return at 4.30, lunch included $75 US each. Tour guide was Carlos he was very informative and helpful. We were with two American girls called Marin and Alexa, and two Germans called Selina and Bernard who were also staying at Johns Guest House. Great fun. This was a 45 minute drive away and then a trek through the forest including several river crossings to get to a cave system where you could see Mayan artefacts and in the last chamber skeletons including the crystal maiden. We climbed and scrambled over and under rocks and through pools We also saw a bats, birds and a scorpion spider. Great day out.
Thursday 5th April
We hired a car for $160 Belize which we split the cost with Selina and Bernard. Petrol cost us $60 Belize for the day.
We went into Mountain Pine Ridge Park to Rio Falls and Big Rock. Climbing over rocks and waterfalls to swim in pools of water. Well worth the effort to see the beautiful waterfalls.
Friday 6th April
Left the guest house at 9am, unfortunately we realised that this was Good Friday and so travel plans maybe disrupted although John had assured us that the bus companies have a contract and have to operate to that. When we arrived at the Bus terminal the Taxi touts were out as we had expected. It the end we were offered a good deal to share a taxi with 4 other people going to Belize with a drop off at Belmopan for us. $15belize each and about an hours drive.
When we arrived at Belmopan we were told that a bus should leave at 10am, but actually didn't leave until 11.30. $6 belize each and a one and half hour journey to Dangriga. It was an old US school bus, no a/c but windows gave ample ventilation and not too long a journey.
Saturday 7th April to Sunday 9th April
Catching up on sleep, watching Cable TV and chilling. Not much else to do because of the Easter weekend.
Next stop Sea Spray Hotel, Placencia
