We went to a place called Montezuma, Montezuma is a town in Costa Rica, we rented a car to get there. Montezuma was about an hour away, our plan was to hike to a waterfall, then go to release baby turtles. In the car we went through Cobano, the same place we celebrated Independence Day, then we entered Montezuma, and drove to the entrance of the trail. We entered the dirt parking lot, and were finding a place to park, when mom saw a man who was speaking English. My mom asked the man how to get to the waterfalls, and that man ended up being a tour guide at the waterfalls. The man took us on the suprisingly long hike, mom told us it would be a little walk, but she was mistaken. The man said his name was Carlos, and he said that if you looked Crazy Carlos up on google you would find reviews about him (or something like that). When our hike was over and we made it to the waterfalls, Crazy Carlos showed me and my brothers something really cool, he showed us if you threw a crumb in the pool beneath the smaller waterfall a group of about 13 fish would come racing over, and the lucky one would get the crumb. For a while me and my 3 brothers threw pieces of our sandwich and carrots into the water, and saw a crowd of fish come racing toward the free food. My dad climbed up the smaller waterfall and when he got to the top he slid down. Something really funny happened to me, I was walking across a pile of sticks, and like 3 ants went up my legs and bit me, I screamed at the top of my lungs, and then Crazy Carlos came and brushed them off. At the waterfall there was a little table covered in bracelets and necklaces. I showed mom and she said I could get a bracelet, it took a while to pick out my favorite bracelet, but I did. I got a bracelet with pink thread and a wooden turtle bead painted aqua blue.
Crazy Carlos told us about a Soda that had really good food (a Soda is a Costa Rican type of resturant) so when we got back to our car we drove to the Soda for lunch. At the Soda I got a hamburger, along with my brothers, my mom got chicken in sauce, and my dad got pork chops. The Soda was called Las Palmeras, Carlos came to the Soda shortly after we arrived. After a yummy lunch we set off to find the turtle conservation place on the beach called ASVO. To get to the ASVO place you had to walk down the beach. We took a short walk down the beach, then we reached our destination. The ASVO area was very simple, it had a small room, and the rest of it was outside, it had tons of turtle nests in it, and it was located right on the beach. We got to the turtle conservation a few hours early, so we played on the beach. lucky us, Levi found a big log, and suggusted that we play pirates and the log be our ship, me and Noah agreed. We enjoyed playing pirates. I found a hollow stick that reminded me of a telescope, I found a nice place to put it in the sand next to the ship. Once Levi, Noah and me were putting the telescope away in its special spot, then we spotted something, there were tons of little white circles. Then it came to me, those white circles were eggs, I remembered watching a Wild Kratts video on crocodiles and turtles, in fact, those were turtle eggs, and they were all being brought out to the sea. We showed our parents and they told ASVO that they should come and check it out, the lady watching over the hatchery at ASVO that second came racing over, one of the ladies who was visiting raced around collecting the eggs that had been about to set off to sea, and the rest of the people carefully but swiftly got the turtle eggs into a bag to bring over to there area. Back on the ASVO property we got to watch the volunteers dig an arms length hole to put the eggs in.
Unfortunately, they had to change the time so many times because the tide was to high, we were there for hours. Finally they began to dig up the newborn baby turtles, they were so cute, the babies were Olive Ridley turtles. When they were done digging them up, they put them in a bucket, one of the ladies asked us if we wanted gloves to help release the turtles, and of course we said "YES". When everyone was done getting photos and adoring the little cuties it was time to let them go to there new home We followed the people to the chosen area on the beach. Releasing the turtles was really fun, we got to pick the turtles out of the bucket, and place them softly on the sand. The turtles were incredibly cute, their shells were 1.5 inches long. The little turtles wabbled to the ocean, so it took them forever to get to to their new home. My mom got a lot of picture and videos of the little cuties.
