We've had several passengers in our tent bag as we've travelled around. A tiny tiny mouse sneaked from our tent when we were pitching it somewhere in Namibia. Nat named him Stuart Little and tried to feed him a cheesy crisp. Had a frog hitch a lift another time and we gave him a puddle of water to play in.
Had a fantastic time in Namibia. Etosha National Park was a great start - LOTS of giraffe (still no chance of feeding them). Brilliant evenings spent at the watering holes where we could see rhinos, lions and giraffe. Nat woke me up one morning at 4.30am (2 hrs before breakfast) because she wanted to go and look at the watering hole again. We went for an hour but nothing exciting happened other than a German man wandering around in his blue y-fronts. I told Natalie to put the camera away.
Went to a Cheetah Park/campsite which was extremely scary. The farmer who owns the place has 27 wild cheetahs penned in an area where we go on the back of a truck and feed them. Absolutely petrified. The guy should stick to farming. I wanted to try and explain to him that maybe he should think about what to do with the animals he has 'saved' but the beer had taken over at that point.
Swakopmund is the adrenaline capital of Namibia where Nat and I decided to sign up for our own activity of shopping. Highly successful and not that expensive. Mr Price wins shop of the year award. Natalie and Sunnu took my braids out! Very happy to wash my hair properly and it turns out Natalie has given me a haircut at the same time... can't tell if it is uneven or not but looks ok. Had food poisoning once again from a posh restaurant which meant the following day I fell asleep at the aquarium while Nat walked around and played. She just left me sleeping by the big fish tank! The sand dunes are amazing. Nat and I declined the desert walk. Why learn something out there what you could learn in an air conditioned conference room? Didn't make it to the top of the sand dune for sunset either. Flashbacks of Everest trek. I blame my recent illness.
Another famous Natalie quote was at Fish River Canyon, the second biggest in the world. I was wondering how all these amazing things are made and Nat replies "Don't worry about silly stuff like that. They're just there." Fair point, really. A great finish to our overland travels. We did manage the 3k walk along the ridge of the canyon. Nat didn't complain once.
The second leg of the overland trip was the best part, from Vic Falls to Cape Town. Truck was emptier, too. Advice to anyone looking for an overland trip - roads better and more things to do on the Zimbabwe-Cape Town trip.
