Odessa to Chisinau
Odessa, Ukraine
Arrived at Odessa airport from Riga where we were jumped on by taxi drivers haggling for trade.
"Sixty dollars for city", a large, generally beige guy shouted.
"He say sixty, I go to for fifty!"
"No", I said in Russian, "too expensive!"
"You are Westerners - we are poor. You pay us fifty dollars."
And that was when I felt ashamed to be British, with few barriers and real borders to cross; ashamed that I couldn't help in some way, but also angry for the Ukrainian taxi drivers - that they felt Westerners were all rich and there to be bled dry. My explanation that we were students didn't help - they countered it with claims that to travel so far, you had to be rich. For the Ukrainians, I guess that's true - visa costs and few cheap airlines (and virtually no plastic money amongst young people at that time) meant that many students there didn't move far.
