Meikles Adventure
Alarm went off again at 4am – still set for the World Cup Soccer – back to sleep until 7:30 (a bit early) and up we got at 8. Bathroom found this morning, so got to wash dishes from the night before, a bit of a face wash without soap and pack the trailer. Not too thrilled – I must say the old temper seems to be showing its ugly head – we are well & truly into our trip now – as Sach said – no more warm houses and home cooked meals (thanks again Jill & Baden!)!
Definitely not a good idea to set this trailer up and take it down for one night's sleep – arrived in the dark and bitter cold – to leave the next morning with light – but relatively in the same way!
Sach was just going to drive right out of Mt Eccles – not too sure why we travelled to get here in the dark then – but I asked to go have a look around. A beautiful lake and lots of beautiful birds & wildlife around. We saw loads of kangaroos, cockatoos, a couple of eagles & even wild emus & a bunny (for the girls).
On to The Grampians – drove through Hamilton (no stop), Dunkeld (no stop) & up through the windy tree lined road to the beautiful mountain called the Grampians – old volcanic matter, a really rugged mountain & a site of aboriginal heritage. Went to a place called 'Bunmar’ – a bit of a tourist trap really – gift shop & a beautiful building further on where they have a movie showing about the aboriginal people & an Aboriginal man gave us a talk on Aboriginal life – possum skins used to make footballs, weapons like the boomerang & a bit of a demonstration on blowing didgeridoos – only for men though so the women could try on a bit of a pipe – that’s ok, maybe not…
Pd $27 for camp site for 2 days ($13.50 per day to camp wherever you want in park) & off we went to try find a spot. I thought we could go be near the Lake Wartook and the Paradise Falls. The camp site we went to first was fenced in and a bit military style (called Smith …) so we went off to try find the other one a bit further up. Decided to take a short cut – not so short cut through a dirt road that was really rugged & taking quite a while to drive – so we decided to stop in a clearing half way to the other side. Started setting up the camp about 3:30, which is probably the best time to stop. All set up – Sach made a huge fire, we had sausages and broccoli with bread & a couple of chips & felt a bit better – no lunch again today. No internet access so Tenille did her journal & the girls did a bit of colouring and running around a bit before dark, then we sat around the fire until Jazzy was tired enough to say I could put her to bed. Tenille did a bit of colouring & reading inside using the fridge as her desk & by about 9:30pm we were in bed. The rain had started & off and on it poured all night – a bit scary – thought we would be seriously flooded out!
