Today was our first full day in Bangkok and a busy day it's been. Started off leisurely with some smiley toast breakfast before I facetimed with Jed. Was lovely to catch up with him and his NZ lifestyle.
Shopping was on the cards today as there was a few necessities that need to be bought. We ventured out into the humidity and walked about 5 minutes before hailing down a tuk tuk. The tuk tuk... Well, that was an experience and a half. Darting through traffic with serious speed in a tiny metal death trap!!! The shopping centre itself was ok, the air conditioning inside was AMAZING! I also found out a secret about Laura... She is a secret thai beater!!!! Iwas shocked and horrified as she incident tried on her cardigan, totally unaware the shop assistant was right behind her... Arm though sleeve and whoops! I think the noise was worse than the knock as we all laughed it off!
After fighting our way out of the maze that was the MBK we headed back to the hostel to book tours for the following days. The floating markets and Kwai river bridge on Wednesday and Attaya on Thursday. We decided that Bangkok was quite expensive with little to do on the cheap so have decided to head up to Chiang Mai earlier than planned. This led to a rather amusing yet frustrating dilemma... How to get to chiang mai. First option was a 13hr over night train .... Fully booked unless we wanted to sit... We opted no. Next option was a flight... After missing out on a great deal the price put us off... Another no. Out final option but the cheapest was an overnight coach for 12 hours... We decided that due to our budget this was the best option in our circumstances. The poor lady helping us was going round in circles and will probably now be glad to see is leave.
Tonight we found Khoa San roan along with another hostel buddy. This area was full of people selling clothes, bugs, ping pong shows and random frog things. It was an experience but not really my thing although I did manage to get a lovely dress for £2... Not bad going. My bartering skills are improving!
On our return to the hostel we came across a rather comical dilemma where by the room key had somehow worked it's way into the liner of my bag. Now we are not stupid, we knew it means the bag had a hole somewhere... Where though was the question! Couldn't find it anywhere. We searched for about 10 minutes before giving in and I went to ask for scissors. The poor lady (the lady from earlier) looked at me with despair as she took one look at the bag and found the hole and the key. I sheepishly walked back upstairs and here I am writing my blog.
It's been a busy and slightly emotional day but all in all a good'un. Laura and I have also discovered a new found love for the sound of music songs as they randomly keep appearing in random song outbursts. Nothing wrong with a bit of "my favourite things"... Perhaps some Annie "tomorrow" <--- see what I did there!
Oh dear, bed time I think before I make any more embarrassing references!!
Night allxxxx
