Here I am, sat in bed and awake at some ungodly hour of the morning... The nerves are kicking in! Seems as good a time as any to write my first blog entry for my quickly approaching trip - a trip I've always wanted to do but never quite believed would happen - a trip around the world!
So how does a relatively shy and and frankly slightly awkward twenty two year old from the tiny island of Guernsey (Channel Islands) come to the decision to travel for an extended period of time (well, 4 months) ? It all started on a Monday morning at work, after a murky 'summer' weekend ...
(Screen blurs and fades and transports you to the past movie style and ACTION! )
... Like I said, after a rainy day last summer in Guernsey I was feeling rather deflated and a bit stuck in the monotony of my weekly routines. It didn't help that my boyfriend of the time was in the final stages of planning his year long travels. Envy set in as I perused the internet, reading various travel blogs and creating a mental wish list of countries I myself would like to visit one day.
Monday morning came round and I spent it sharing my mental wish list with my colleague and friend, Laura. We began to joke about throwing in our jobs, packing out bags and beginning an adventure in the big wide world. The joking gradually became more serious, until two weeks later we had done it... Purchased our round the world flights and planning was in full motion!
That was 8 months ago, looking back those months have been a blur of telling the parents and friends, telling work (surprisingly easier than telling the parents) and research. Lots and lots of research.
It's now 2 days before I leave, and as I said earlier, the nerves are kicking in. My bags are packed (I'm sure I will unpack and repack in a panic on Friday morning), I've already said goodbye to some people who I will not see for the next four months and whilst it is now very very real, I don't think it's yet quite sunk in what I'm about to embark on. Definitely the biggest adventure if my life to date. I can't wait to explore new cultures, meet new people from all over the world and fit in as many new experiences as possible!
Before I finish this entry and try to get some more sleep, here's the basic route for my travels:
Morocco, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and America
I'll leave it at that for now, but keep your eyes peeled for my next entry.
A la perchoine (until next time in Guernsey Patois)
