I can't even begin to tell you how amazing Firenze is! Our first day, Jenny and I got lost in Milan, trying to find the train station. Then, we got off at the wrong station in Florence and got lost here. By the time we made it to the hotel, we were sweaty, dehydrated, hadn't eaten since 5:30, and incredibly jetlegged. Despite it all, we unpacked and I waited for my roommates to get there. Mary came soon and she unpacked too and we went with a few friends to a bar down the street. Dinner is at 7 every night in the hotel so we came back and towards the end of dinner, Sunny finally got there. We decided to go out as roommates and found a bar near the Duomo called Astor. We made friends with the bartender and the bouncer and eventually a lot of the others from our group made it and we were the first people on the dance floor in the basement. It turned out to be an amazing night.
Thursday we had class at 9am, then broke up into our groups to explore our area. Our group got lost in Oltrano, but it became such an awesome adventure. We found some of the beautiful places and hidden things in the Oltrano area. Then, at dinner, we discussed all that had happened throughout the day... including our group finding such a fabulous little park where the locals would play soccer and play on the slide.
Friday we had class very early again and we explored our area again. This time, we actually found our "hot spots" like Santo Spirito and Santa Maria del Carmine, which were more beautiful than the books could say. There is such interesting history in this city. That night we went to a pub called Friends in the Oltrano district. We were walking back across the Ponte Vecchio and I turned and missed a curb and completely faceplanted. I mean, faceplanted. I woke up the next day with a very large right ankle and a beautiful bruise on my chin. At least it's a story right?
The next day we made a day trip to Viareggio, which is a beautiful beach. It wasn't as hot as we originally thought, but it was a nice break from such hot weather we were experiencing in Florence. The pizzaria we went to for dinner served huge pizzas for only a few euro.. and they were DELICIOUS! It was worth the walk to find it (even with a sprained ankle). Probably the best part of the train ride home was when Johnny fell asleep on the train. I was sitting next to him and Sunny was across from him. He sleeps with his mouth open and Sunny was tired and in a very strange mood, so she tries to throw little pieces of paper into his mouth. She threw about 17 (probably 5 landed in his shirt) before she finally got it in. By then, we were both laughing so histerically we couldn't even watch. Johnny was pretty upset, but he forgave us.. he always does =]
Sunday was the first day I had the chance to sleep in, and I took full advantage of it. After finally beginning our day and showering, we went to lunch near the Academia and to a supermarket to get Sunny a toothbrush and other essentials since her bag is still lost. (Almost a week.. this is getting insane) We decided to go to a true, Italian, five course meal for dinner and Teddy and Mark decided to join us.. the boys looks absolutely amazing! (and so did we!) Eventually, the night turned into a true bonding night and I love my roommates more than ever.
Yesterday we had internet acess for the first time, so we spent all day researching and facebooking. My cell phone died on Saturday and I realized Sunday my charger had stopped working.. so I spent a lot of the day stressing about not having my phone and not having a means to charge it. At night, we bought 2 or 3 euro wine and had a few people over our room for a glass or two. It turned out to be not only a relaxing night, but a night to really get to know a lot of people.
Today we did part of our walking tour around Oltrano, but the rain ruined the rest of it. At least my part of the project is over with!
I'm having an absolute blast, I'm getting to know some amazing people, and I can't wait to tell you all more about my trip!
Ciao!Â
