Day 73
SNOW!!!
Yes, it snowed last night, just a little, but definitely snow. There was a light dusting on our picnic table and snow was glistening on the trees. It is time for us to leave beautiful Alaska.
It is in the 30s today, with on and off misting rain plus a little snow now and then. Aaahhh, heated car seats.
We started off from Tok on the Alaska Highway, Highway 1, heading for Canada. We are about 90 miles from the Canadian border, and we plan to make it to Haines Junction in the Yukon this afternoon. Several places have already closed down for the winter, shut off water, etc. so for the next several days, at least until we get out of Canada, we will be taking our chances on gas stations and campgrounds. Should be interesting . . .
Made it to Canada, Yukon Territory at 10:40am Alaska Time, but now we are on Pacific Time, so it is 11:40am. We will gradually ease our way back into the eastern time zone as we make our way south and east.
Lots of road construction delays once we crossed into Canada. In fact, it was the WORST road for over 3 hours. Up and down like a roller coaster, with tons of potholes thrown in for even more jostling about. Had to keep our speed way down to prevent car or camper damage. Makes us really appreciate all the smooth roads we usually drive.
Saw a couple of trumpeter swans on a beautiful pond. We thought most had migrated south already, but this couple must have decided to delay their trip. They looked so pretty and white against the dark lake surrounded by snow dusted green spruce trees.
We went through Beaver Creek, Canada's most westerly community. Saw lots of snow along the way today, heavy dustings on the ground and trees, heavier snow on the higher elevations. Guess their summer is done up here.
On our drive in the Yukon today, Michael saw a big bull moose, in a creek, but by the time we stopped, it was gone. Next we saw Dall sheep up on Tachal Dhal (Sheep Mountain). There were hundreds, too many to count. Next, and very exciting, we saw a beautiful coyote with a striped coat crossing the road near Kluane Lake. We were able to stop, get out, follow him a bit and get some pictures. Great day for wildlife viewing.
Stopped for the night in Haines Junction, Yukon at Kluane RV Kamp, just off the road, nice level spots nestled up against beautiful mountains. The people are friendly and the sites have electric and cable. Water has been shut off, so we filled our water tank for our showers and bathroom. We took a little walk, had dinner, watched some tv.
